One swallow doesn't make a summer

Another section by popular demand. If you want to talk about anything else that grows that is not livestock, herbs, fruit or vegetables here it goes.

 They're back!!

Looked at this thread yesterday and thought - blimey! they are late this year. Then driving back home through the deluge, I've just seen about 10 swallows swooping about and gathering mud (of which we have lots!) for their nests.

Yours are probably on their way too MMM.

I knew it would happen, as soon as I posted that yesterday I just KNEW they would appear ... and they have, just seen a couple swooping over the field.
Today we have nearly gale force gusty north-easterly winds, so why did they wait for a difficult head wind I wonder.
Anyway nice to see them, it's been too long.
Tony

Just saw a threesome, skimming the surface of the River Hamble along the Warsash bank of the Solent Way, using the gusts to speed them onwards.

My parents in Gloucestershire got their regular swallows back last week - they nest in the garage, so dad can't shut the garage door now, and has to cover the car to protect it from poo!! But they love to have them, and especially enjoy seeing the young birds. Haven't seen any in East London yet.

Funny that you've now got my swallows and I've got your cuckoo at long last!

Actually the swallows hadn't gone, but there just aren't very many of them yet. I did see my first swift the other day too. :thumbright:

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Oh Mrs Moustoir aren't you getting all this lovely sun in between the showers?

Yesterday it warmed up and I realised I was actually rather hot in my winter gardening jacket! First time I've been jacketless all month I think.

Not much sun at all MMM - just grey and cloudy. Today has been awful again with on/off drizzle.

Still, the new grass is growing well so there IS a silver lining to all this rain.

What a difference 150 ish kms make  - up until a few days ago it's been really sunny here in between the rolling grey clouds and intermittent showers, but chilly. Not much is growing here, grass included. I thought before the rain came it didn't grow because it was too dry, now it's grown a bit but considering we've now had nearly 3 weeks of rain, AND it's April, I would have expected it to be a foot tall by now and it only just needs a mow. Very odd!

Awwww yes!

Yesterday was the first day that there were TONS of swallows here, it was just like 'normal'. It helps probably that there are cows back in the field next to the veg patch (cows = flies) so they were swooping low in amongst the cows then twittering over my garden. :hugish:
