Fit-PC running Ubuntu and an XP lappy on the same network?

Tomorrow's World was a show on BBC TV about innovations and tech stuff and I thought a good name for our computing and tech section.

Fit-PC running Ubuntu and an XP lappy on the same network?

Post: # 134267Post Thurston Garden »

I am full of techy questions today!

I am quite taken with the 5W fit-pc which I would like to act as my music server. It would hold my FLAC music files and only have Squeezecentre running on it.

Having always been tempted by Ubuntu before, but having to bin the idea due to only having a works laptop with XP on, the question is, can I have the fit-pc run Ubuntu AND have my XP laptop running on the same network - I would need to rip my CD's on my laptop and then copy them over the network to the fit-pc which will be headless/have no monitor or mouse.

Calling all geeks

My geeky OH says yes.

You can share the Ubuntu disk to the network with Samba which will make it visible to the XP machine. That is the easiest way to do it but there are other cool ways to do it if you want to.
