Openoffice.org

Tomorrow's World was a show on BBC TV about innovations and tech stuff and I thought a good name for our computing and tech section.

I'm not sure what you mean by the text filter - nor is Excel Help

Give us a clue and I'll have a look around Open Office - I'll be well gobsmacked if what you need isn't actually there.

Ok... well I usually apply a data filter when I upload the pricelist - and from each column, when I click the little downward arrow/triangle I am given an option (in Excel) to filter - I can choose equal to, contains, begins with, ends with, and more. I don't appear to be able to do this with OO calc.

eg. I've got a column called description. It contains 6000 items and I want to call up anything that has flour in the description. I can choose 'contains' and then type in 'flour' and it will only show the details for the descriptions containing 'flour' - it's been really useful to me while looking for certain items in the spreadsheet.

Of course this may not be the best way to do it, and there could be a search function that would do the job just as well, if not better.

I'm not put off, I've got Office 2007 anyway, but I do know that a lot of the people that download the spreadsheet don't have the same version (and indeed some may not have ANY version and thus don't order from the food co-op). If anyone knows of a way to upload a spreadsheet that can be shared, viewed, and updated by those that are allowed access then please let me know.

I posted the solution - and then tried it myself and so deleted my post. You're right - the function you need doesn't appear to be there. As it's such a simple function, that's plain silly. Like the police investigating the hole in the road, I'm looking into it.

EDIT: OK - I'm well gobsmacked. You can set up the downward arrow, but the dropdown box doesn't contain the filter conditions you need. An issue about the missing conditions was raised with the development team earlier this year, so I suppose that it's all in the pipeline. I am severely disgruntled.

Thanks, Oldfella.

I thought I had a spare one in the shed, but it appears that the mice have gnawed through the seal for the krombish valve.

Have you tried Ctrl+F to do a simple "Find" for the text you want in the document?

Only after the last river has been poisoned,
Only after the last fish has been caught,
Only then will you realise that money cannot be eaten"
