101 ways 'ish has changed your life

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

101 ways 'ish has changed your life

Post: # 99698Post Annpan »

I have been meaning to start this for some time now, while cutting my grass with my push power mower and spotting an area with fresh nettles I suddenly realised that had it not been for 'ish I would never have had the courage to move out to the country, to get this much land, to plan to be self-sufficient in fruit and veg (and eggs... eventually) so...

1. Courage to move to the country
2. I will be Home-educating E.
3. Got a woodburner to heat our house
4. Got rid of the TV
5. Making my own yoghurt
6. I now don't use electricity for jobs that can be done without.
7. Wee wipes
8. made lots of like minded friends (to me, this is the most important, as it is the other ishers that make this lifestyle so much easier and less lonely  )

Anyone have any more?

14. Think a lot more about subjects I hadn't even thought about/known about/given a damn about before - too numerous to mention! But the point of this no. 15 is that ISH has made me think more!

15. Foraging (OK in my own garden but even so  ) for edible greens such as sorrel and jack by the hedge, and trying edible weeds even if I didn't like most of them!

16. Refocused my life on self-sufficiency and living in tune with my surroundings rather than trying to go back to work and the consumer world.

17. Got me interested in Permaculture.

It has been a great help to me in formulating my town based ideas. Landfill is the big problem. Where does it occur? Out in the countryside away from public view. Sustainability is the answer to waste and it is also part of the isher make-up. Hopefully, isher values can transfer to mainstream living.

19. Got me far too overexcited about the possibility of growing things in container I now have far too many seeds and nowhere to put them.

20. Making my own yoghurt. Still can't do it, but I'm trying.
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?

21. Gave me the confidence to start a blog about my bits and bobs.
22. Gave me heaps of knowledge

it did also help me get rid of the tv same as Annpan. Now I spend a lot more time 'inventing' useful garden thingies with bits of 'rubbish/treasure' so I guess that would be no. 23

23. Given me ideas on how to reuse rubbish that might otherwise go into landfill.

24. Re-focused back to my goals, which I had let slip. We have so much work to do here that I was concentrating almost solely on the veg and now I'm back on track. Thanks guys. ww.

28. Because of Ish, i've met a few like-minded people!
29. Taught me to make wine (even if half of it has been a failure...).
30: Taught me to make soap.
31: Ish has made me more independent - from social norms rather than generally. I know now that i like carrots with mud on more than i like the ones grown in polythene bags from Tescos!!
