101 uses for vinegar

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

22. Mix it with bicarbonate of soda for a good cleaning paste, removes burnt on grease with a little effort (and a little salt) and shines up brass wonderfully (don't use salt as it scratches the surface).

I use white vinegar as a softener and cleanser for my DD's nappies, it softens them without reducing the absorbancy, and also freshens them beautifully. Without it she would be wearing thoroughly crunchie nappies - not nice!

Has anyone said "toilet cleaner" yet?

Because I only flush once or twice a day, and with rainwater, and the area is hardwater, there was a nasty dark mark in the bowl and around the "tide mark". However hard I scrubbed it the stain wouldn't budge.

Yesterday I poured half a litre of white vinegar into the bowl and left it for a ocuple of hours. Shazzam!!! the loo is lovely and clean now.

I buy bicarb in 1kg boxes in Wilkos & 1kg bags of soda crystals (for laundry etc) from the Co-op. Both are from dripak, they have a website I believe, but don't know if they sell larger packs.
