101 uses for a plastic milk container

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

We sometimes use the 2 pint ones as cane toppers in the garden. Not very pretty but do the job.

I cut mine in half and grow plants in them, i use the top half to stick into pots or hanging baskets and water direct to the roots

Cut them up to make plant labels.
Keep the caps. Pop them in your baskets and tubs to make little dishes that hold the water. I had a hanging pot that I forgot about for a week and it survived.
Use to freeze home-made fruit juice, whey for bread making.
Use as a shaker when making sauces or pancake batter.
Prick holes in the top, fill with water, and use as an emergency watering can complete with hose (you do have to squeeze it quite hard).
Use to store wormery liquor, they sit under the tap of the wormery quite well.

I cut the bottoms off the 4pt size and made a hole in the top and bottom of the handle, placed them over my bean and pea seedlings and pushed a short cane through the holes in the handle and into the ground, kept the frost off them and totally stoped the mice eating them and didn't loose a plant this year. :flower:

Sounds interesting Jessie but I can't quite visualise the holes and canes bit - any chance of a pic?

Green Aura The only way that Dennis can find to put the photo on the forum is to use Photobucket or Picasa and he doesn't want to create an account with either,do you know if there is any other way to post a photo?

We use the bottom half as a sawdust scoop for the composting loo. The top half (lid removed) buried in the soil next to the tomatoes and makes a good watering reservoire. we ran out of pipe and that was all there was...seems to work quite well! Have also used them as mini cloche with bottom cut off... good idea to stake them though Jessie! Will try that next time :thumbright:
