Can I freeze cooked beetroot?

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Can I freeze cooked beetroot?

Post: # 206919Post Millymollymandy »

I'm sure I've read here somewhere than you can. I cooked up a load yesterday to make the chocolate beetroot brownies from the recipe posted here in the beetroot thread and very yummy it was too :thumbright: however I've got quite a lot of 'troot in the fridge and would like to freeze some for if (when!) I want to make these brownies again. Otherwise I'm going to have to pickle them! Then the brownies won't be very nice! :pale:

Can't see why not - they just might be a bit mushy when you defrost them. But as you presumably could mash them to put in the brownies it shouldn't be a problem. If it doesn't work you can always make borscht!

I don't know about cooked but they're fine raw. I grate them and freeze them for breadmaking.

Oh well two of them are in the freezer and just the right amount to grate for brownies. If they turn to mush it won't matter as recipe says either grate or puree.

Will let you know how they are when I defrost them!

The beetroot is still in the freezer but I can confirm that the beetroot brownies froze OK and got eaten. You'll have to wait until I get round to making more to find out.....and I'm all beetrooted out right now as I pickled a load yesterday. :pale:

cooked beetroots freeze very well. i steam and peel them - the box and freeze - once thawed they are just as they were before being frozen. :)
