The amount of energy present in sun is enough to make the whole world, charge up. Investment in solar energy has risen owing to the healthy conditions seen in the solar energy sector. The cost of the solar energy has reduced since 1980. This trend is expected to continue as the demand drops and there is an increase in production capability. Moreover, the conversion capability of silicon cells has increased from 4% in 1982 to over 20% in recent times.

There has been a growth in photovoltaic industry with the total installed capacity of these cells in the year 2007 reaching 8.7 GW. The production of the solar cells has also increased by 50% and has been doubling in every two years. These are signs of the growth in the industry, which has led to greater investment in the sector.

Sun’s energy has been in use since a long time. In fact, the earth absorbs nearly 3,850, 000 exajoules (EJ) of solar energy. It is believed that in one hour, the earth absorbs sun’s energy that is equal to its energy needs for one year. The low costs and increased efficiency of the solar energy systems have made it possible for the mankind to tap this voluminous energy.
