I have planted an avocado stones in a pot and thought it was flourishing. I visited some friends in Cardiff who have one the same but have very different results. Mine is a about 1.5 feet (50cm) tall and totally green. Looking like a long blade of grass.

Meanwhile back in Cardiff, they have what looks like a mini tree, with bark leaves and everything and it is about half the size.

Am I doing something wrong and if so can this be rectified. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Andy

Avocados grow bushier if you break out the growing tip. Once the plant has a few leaves, just take the top of.

It's still probable that yours is a different variety, though, if it has grown that tall and still looks like a blade of grass! I get the best results with germinating avocado just by throwing them on the compost heap. Next year, when I turn the compost over, I'll find it has started growing somewhere in the heap... My house never gets warm enough, and the heat of the compost sets it off beautifully!

Hi Andy

Just one point if you cut out the growing tip it will never fruit it wants to be a tree not a bush, but if all you want is a house plant not a problem.

Another one that died I am afraid. It got knocked off the window ledge when I lived in a first storey flat

I did hear that avacados started in pots will never fruit....
