A Big 'Howaya' from Ireland!
Hi Everyone,
I am SO glad to have found the site!
We moved from the UK (Blackpool of all places!) to live in Co Galway in the west of Ireland last year.
After renting a gorgeous brand new house on an acre of lawn, we are in the process of buying an older bungalow on 2 acres, that comes complete with a 'derelict' cottage at the bottom of the garden, a 2 bay hayshed, surrounded on 2 sides by a small conifer forest & 3 acres of peat bog just along the road.
And so we are getting ready to start living the 'Good Life'.... although hubby will be still be working in his job & it will be me at home in me wellies each day! The gardens to the new house already have plum, pear & apple trees, as well as eucalyptus, holly, raspberries, oh blimey, all sorts of things!
We are looking into the possibility of using some of the bog to grow blueberries - maybe saving an acre to cut for fuel, and of course, the forest will provide plenty of wood too! Next to the old cottage, there is a good sized lawn which will turned over for the veggies & plenty of room for a decent sized greenhouse or polytunnel. The section with the hayshed will be kept for the livestock - chicken coops alongside & maybe goats... or sheep..... still undecided as yet, but as there is a farm next door, I'm sure they'll help!
So that's outlined our new adventure to come... I can't wait!
Julie.

Re: A Big 'Howaya' from Ireland!
Thank you for the welcome!
Until these last few days, I never realised just how 'eco-aware' I really am already in some areas & then again, in other areas, I really let the side down..... (Think 'tumble dryer!)
Now, my hubby would like to start making home brews of some description, but at the minute he's on cans of guinness - I need lots of ideas on what I could use the empty cans for! (We have LOTS!)
This week, we should have the mortgage decision - gulp! So, fingers crossed - although I have a feeling we are taking on a HUGE project & my poor feet will have to get used to sloshing round in wellies for a long long time!
Julie.... (who is currently doing a perfect duck impression..... calm on the outside, but inside, everything is churning away furiously waiting for the AIB's mortgage letter!!)

Hi and welcome from Donegal!
We're both Dubliners in search of The Good Life.
We're halfway there: I still have to commute to work to keep the bank manager happy, but we're working on it.
I think I have the solution to your mortgage and beer can collection in one:
A house made of beer cans.

Re: A Big 'Howaya' from Ireland!
Wow.... a black & white beer can house - now there's a thought - do you think Guinness would sponsor us & donate the land for it to go on?
I thought I could use them on strings & around the veggie patch when it's started, the clinking & clanging might keep the deer & birds off.... but the beer can house looks like a LOT more fun!

Re: A Big 'Howaya' from Ireland!
Thank you all for the welcomes! Nice to see other folks from the green country on here too!
A quick update..... the post has just been - just the leccy bill!
Oh, I am SO impatient.... how I ever manage to grow my veggies & flowers, I'll never know, 'cos when I do something, I want the results NOW!
So, although it's a grey day outside, I'm off to weed the pea & bean strips - it'll keep me busy!
Julie.

Greetings from West Cork Julie.
I'm sure you won't regret it.
I moved here 14 years ago from Kent and I certainly don't regret one minute.

Re: A Big 'Howaya' from Ireland!
Just a quick update.....
(This is more for me really - until I actually see it written down, I'm not sure I quite believe it!!)
We got our mortgage!! Woohoo!
We first applied to the AIB, who messed up the application spectacularly, & put us in for a 100% type - and in Ireland, it's nigh impossible to get a 100%'er - Grrr!
Anyways, we went last friday to Bank of Ireland & the bank we use - went to see the bank lady, who then has organised the whole thing & we got told yesterday afternoon! This just proves to me that the Irish way is SO much better - I can still remember the agonising wait 6 yrs ago in the UK when we were waiting for a decision
So, that's us just about done - should be moving in about 4 weeks & then I'll be bugging you all for tips on keeping/rearing chickens, and hunting for aga recipes for the winter - but I expect I'll also be asking loads of questions about the said aga - I've never had one before, so this should be fun!
So - any more suggestions as to what to use the land for? It's a sectioned garden of about 2 acres, & there's 3 acres of peat bog up the road too - but I think one acre of that will be reserved for turf cutting & keeping the aga alight thru the winter - smells nice & best of all.....it's free
Sorry for the waffle - I'm on a natural high!
Julie.
