Herd Number in ROI

Post: # 259672Post delineator »

Hi All
We are in process of buying a rural property in Co Mayo Ireland it has 4 acres of land and we want to have a few sheep to help keep the grass down, we would like some rare breed sheep like ryelands. We had some ryeland sheep before at our last property and used to breed a small number each year. We have a UK holding number and wanted to ask the requirements to obtain what we understand to be a Herd number in Ireland. How do we go about applying for a herd number and are there any minimum requirement on land size or flock size etc.
All advice/help very welcome
Go easy on me it's my 1st posting

Hi, I'm not much help on this but I have found that all the authorities in Mayo have been very helpful so I would advise you to go straight to the horses mouth and ask.

BTW where in Mayo are you?

Thanks for advice, the property is near the little village of Bonniconlon. Nearest large town is Ballina.
Do you know the area ?

We are in Wexford and have got a pig herd number and sheep/goat flock number. The phone number for the sheep herd dept at the dept of agriculture in Dublin is 1890 252 713. They should direct you to your local office who will send out someone to do your inspection.

For ear tags and guns etc, we use Agrihealth Ltd in Monaghan, tel 1890 515151, they're well priced and deliver promptly.
