When we’ve read our weeklies - the New Scientist and The Week - we give them to the local library. They are very grateful, as their grants have been severely cut so they can’t offer them to readers anymore. Our mags go first to Ilminster library, which then passes them on to Chard, Crewkerne and South Petherton.
Better than the recycling bin!

What a fantastic idea. My neighbour buys the New Scientist and passes them on to me to read but because I live in a tiny space I don't know where to keep them all. This would be a great solution.

I will talk to the library next time I am in there.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand it infururiates me that we need to supplement a service which is being cut on ideological grounds (excuse the brief foray into politics).

On the other hand it's a splendid idea to pass them on to a wider audience, so well done you. Our mobile library unfortunately doesn't carry periodicals - nor do we have a subscription to any.

You must have a slightly more highbrow surgery than us, we seem to gets those stupid Hello magazines, the Take a Break I picked up the other day was from 2010.

I try to keep away from any doctors - and especially our local surgery, which does not have a good reputation at all... Lots of serious health problems not detected etc. Not good. Keep away if you want to stay alive.

And my dentist has that bl**dy annoying music on everywhere, so I try and get there at the last minute and spend as little time as possible on the premises!

When I posted this to another forum ("Down the Lane"), someone replied:

I just found out last week that our library takes book donations. The decent ones are catalogued and put on the shelves. The tatty ones are sold on to a paper reclamation business and will be turned into paper. An income for the library!

Good idea! I wonder if other libraries do it that way? Hers is in North Lincs.

Excellent! First time I meet somebody who knows them - although most people don't really like all that musak... I'm a member of the Edinburgh group - they are too far away from me to get involved directly, but I'm on their email list.

I must admit that I have donated a couple of books to the library in the past year - the library had neither of them so it was a good thing. But a lot of people don't realise that you can donate good clean books to your local library.

Mind you there are a lot of people who do support Barter Books in Alnwick which takes in good standard books and sells them on. They must also do house clearing as some of the things in locked cases are real gems of things collectors would give good money to own.
