what's it for?

Post: # 261838Post green_pea »

This might be a silly question, but I've seen people with empty 2L bottles placed upside down over a stick/cane in their gardens near plants. What are they for?

Said to deter moles. Aparently the wind vibrates the canes and the moles don't like it.

they do it here to deter birds from eating the crops. they rattle in the wind and act like a scare crow. dont know if it actually works but lots of people have plastic bottles poped on top of their fence posts all the way round their property.

didnt know about the mole thing. we've got moles, and we've got these soler mole repellent things, which consist of a plastic stick thing powered my a wee soler pannel which beeps and is supposed to scare them away as it gives out the same frequency as a preditor trying to dig down to get at them. we'll see if its worked when we dig up the potatoes, if they've not been eaten by the moles.

Have tried it here but it's not for moles, it's for the voles and burrowing mice. Only it doesn't work. I still have some remnants (very green dirty bottles!) in the veg patch but it's more that I'm too lazy to bother removing them than for any other reason!

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

I thought they were shelters for ladybirds and the like.

Perhaps I've just never got rid of a story told to me as a child by my mum!!

They're to stop any tripping over injuries, at least that's why they use them at the local allotments. It also makes it easier just to chuck a net over stuff when the pigeons are after stuff.
