Re: 2009 the big Selfsufficientish Year - one month challenge
I say, I say after a week and a day I am just beginning to see that my lazy ways will have to change. I've made bread from the stores when the loaf ran out. But don't have the ingredients or the time to make ice cream to replace what's in the freezer when it runs out. So that means I shall have to g...

Re: How do you cope with ignorant people?
You have to have a thick skin to be the oddball in the group. Or change your group. Your friends need to be like minded. If you find colleagues at work who can put up with your ways and nod in agreement that it's a good lifestyle, fine. But remember, you have to tolerate other people's lif...

Re: Local eco shop closed
A sad thing when the bailiffs go in - that means lack of turnover to pay bills rather than lack of willing to trade. It does no good for the owners and staff nor the customers. I suspect that people think that environmentally friendly products are just too expensive. Tis a fib as I find that the Fai...

Nope - that's why farmers have such big fields. You need space.

Well here we are folks. It's the suggested start date. Hey ho - now we are going to learn a lot about ourselves I suspect.
There are no failures here - just learners.

Re: self sufficiency an expensive hobby #2 ,or what do you do
seems the topic has run a bit dead .What I make of it then is that being ss is up to everybody for themselves ,what they do ,and as much as they can do ,depending on their situation. "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Mahatma Gandhi I still think it is needed to buy in...

I see that the suggested dates for this were 15th August - 15th September so I've three days to get myself organised to see how far I can go. Yipee!

Re: What more can I do in a rented property?
I suspect that use less could be the answer to cleaning. Not less cleaning but using less of a variety of things. We can so easily be conditioned that we need one bottle of stuff for mopping the floor, another for cleaning the windows, a third for cleaning the oven, a fourth for cleaning the bathroo...

Re: 2009 the big Selfsufficientish Year - one month challenge
Vegetables - not a problem. Have frozen various gluts rather than throw them which means that I have things to use. I had a big stock up of the store cupboard in July - things like various sorts of tinned beans, pasta, lentils which are things you don't usually grow on an allotment in the UK. I don'...

Re: self sufficient an expensive hobby ?
But Paul - as you say you are only buying in because you are not self sufficient in something. You choose what you want to buy in. You could trade or barter something for organic vegetables if you have a service or a skill to offer. Say a haircut or three, cleaning a house, mending a car. Do you kno...

Re: Identifying plant in my allotment
It is a great invader because it seeds like a snowstorm for weeks. It does have big roots too. Let it flower and then compost it. Regard it as a free donation both to the bees and the compost heap. But you may not be popular when people find out that it proliferates even more effectively than the da...
