Re: Homeschooling aswell as going to school question
I know what you mean and I`m no expert and more experienced folk than me will prolly give you a definitive answer to this but - - If it were me I`d stick to the play and discovery at home and leave the school to follow the National Curriculum. In my limited experience most 5yo children have a short ...

Re: weight loss group
Cautionary Tale! I`ve lost two stones in a year after a heart scare. This has had three main effects. 1) Lots of lovely skinny clothes from charity shops. 2) People looking soulfully at me and murmuring, 'Are you all right, love?' 3) The layer of fat under my skin going to leave very visible wrinkle...

Degree
I got my finals results and degree classification yesterday. I got a First. Does that make me brainy? Well, I read the notification wrong and thought I hadn`t even been awarded an Honours degree, just a BA. I cried with disappointment all night. My study buddy pointed me to the right bit of the noti...

Re: permission needed to keep chucks ?
You could start by checking your deeds or tenancy agreement that there`s no clause banning livestock - although our deeds say no livestock and I ignored them as they were sixty years old! You could mention it casually to the immediate neighbours - without making it sound a big deal. When we got ours...

Re: The Private Life Of... (Jimmy Doherty on cows, chickens,
I experimented with this eyesight thing.
Ginger has a habit of flying over the fence into the veg plot and I have to entice her back if she won`t let me pick her up. I tried approaching her from the right - the food side - and succeeded in picking her up every time!
Result!

Re: The Private Life Of... (Jimmy Doherty on cows, chickens,
We watched the chicken one last night. There wasn`t a lot that we didn`t know already but the bits about the superiority of hens` eyesight and their surprising teachability were interesting. And the fact that they could tell that a stuffed fox dragged along on a trolley was no threat.
A fun programme.

Re: Reasons why a potato plant would go flop
I was interested to read this thread because I`ve got one or two plants in each row of spuds going yellow and keeling over. No sign of disease or beasties and when I dug one up yesterday I found eight dinky little spuds - not nearly big enough but looking healthy. Dunno what it is - none of my allot...

Welcome!
Keep us informed about your move. I also live in a quiet suburban street but have chickens in the back garden and veg in the front.
Nobody seems to mind.

Re: Romaine Lettuce
I planted Romaine lettuce this year and I`m using it as 'cut and come again'. I cut the whole lettuce as I use it about two inches above the ground and it grows new leaves like magic. It`s worked up until now this year, anyway. I`ve got about three dozen lettuces planted and they`ve kept us going fo...

Re: make do and mend; is it worth it?
This reminds me of the mower we had at the allotment (for the orchard grass). A neighbouring plot holder gave it to us because he was getting a 'better one', (which turned out to be rubbish.) It gave brilliant service for some years but eventually gave up when the much repaired casing cracked right ...

Re: worst five things on telly
There`s football? Seriously though, I think there`s summat wrong with our telly. Whenever I switch it on for a match the sound goes all sort of tooth-drilling buzzy and I have to switch it off. :? :dontknow: It only happens when there`s a football game on so perhaps it`s a sort of aversion therapy t...
