Re: Taking bay cuttings

Thanks very much for that advice mr crocket , I'll be out there with my shears and my little tub of rooting powder as soon as I get the time.
No suckers on my tree .

Taking bay cuttings

Sorry if this is a tad niave but I've never tried it with a bay before. I have a bay tree in the garden that needs trimming down because there's only so many bay leaves you can use and anyway it's starting to get just a bit too big for where it is. Now I mentioned this to a friend and she has asked ...

Re: Just a thought about sport...

I tend to agree with 2rdRM about the relavance of some of the sports. Things like the triple jump or hop , skip and jump as it was called at school seem just bizarre and then there's things like dressage, and syncronized diving all totally useless feats in the real world. Other things that baffle me...

Re: Inventors Corner

Perhaps it's already been done (I don't go shopping very often) but why can't the kettle and thermos be combined ?

Re: Paper Log Makers - The Best One?

Years ago I built a simple wooden frame bolted together and squeezed the paper bricks with an old hydraulic car jack. I did wonder about the time and effort involved for the actual heat returned so to speak and it all got left behind when I started work as a carpenter with access to lots of offcuts....

Re: Insence as a form of air freshener

When we moved into our house we found the best or rather worst of both worlds in that the former owners were both smokers and dog breeders.Indeed when we first visited the house to look the woman greeted us with a puppy in one hand and a cigarette in the other which added to the unkempt garden and p...

Re: Little things that really annoy you!

There are loads of big things that annoy me from banks , polititans, facebook and so on and so on , but to answer the question about the little things- Companies who have the word "solutions" in their title, think engineering solutions, design solutions and as one I worked for building sol...

Re: What to do with a field?

Well it's good to know that I'm not a million miles off the mark with the composting idea. I suppose that it would really need to be at least 100 tonnes and probably a good deal more for it to be a viable source of income. I'm assuming that the 100 tonnes would be the weight of the material diposite...

Re: What to do with a field?

Almost forgot another idea I came up with. Allow gardeners to tip their waste on the field and here I'm thinking pros with ton sacks of clippings every day and then simply compost it and sell it on. Would that even work? There would be little outlay to start, an industrial shredder and a shovel foll...

Re: What to do with a field?

Many thanks to all who took the time to don their thinking caps. As I said the land is currently used for grazing sheep although from what my friend can glean from the old chap who owns the field the money he gets from leasing it out is only just at the breaking even level. Continuing to use the lan...

What to do with a field?

I have a friend who owns a cottage in Wales about 20 or so miles from Welshpool. The field in front of him is coming up for sale soon and my friend is interested in buying it largely to stop any development or building on the land and spoiling what is in fairness a pleasent and tranquil little valle...

Re: Clean labels off jars

I tend to use the wire wool , warm water and elbow grease approach but more than often I'll just put the new label over the top of the exsisting one, lazy but simple. On the subject of labels I've got several batches of homemade wine that I appear to have not labelled at all and a few more with two ...

Re: "Self Composting Toilet" or "Bucket and Chuck it"

Sorry to dig up an old post and I apologise if that's not the done thing on here. In truth I perhaps should have found this post a few years ago because I'd put waste from my daughter's potty onto the compost heap when she was younger. I'd also put the nappy contents on too when she was a baby. At t...

Re: "Grey water"

Thanks for those ideas, I'll probably give the copper wire a try first , no offence to the goldfish method. Thinking about it I have read about people putting copper strips on roofs to combat moss growth and copper roofs I've worked on are normally quite clean. Right off to bend a bit of wire :icon_...
