Re: I fancy going on a rubbish reduction year

:angryfire: There's been this hooligan of a wind blowing today and it has of course blown a whole load of rubbish into the front yard. All of it was for the recycling bin but that's not the point. It's extra rubbish. Trouble is that the wind has been blowing wheelie bin lids open so I suppose this c...

Re: Don't buy anything new in 2009!

Ah not to worry about a small glitch like £4.99 eh? I've just bought the potting compost for the season for the allotment tubs as well as seed potatoes and shallots. I also provided all the veg during the summer for the daughter and her family with exception of mushrooms last year. Now all that come...

Re: Helop New to Allotments

Hi thanks for the advice yes its still cold - I'm in County Durham - I was just wondering what I could plant first once the hard work of digging is done - is there anything worth putting in in February ...??? I'm next door in Northumberland and we reckon that early planting starts end of March unle...

Re: Ethical Clothing

I've looked. No use for on the allotment and most of it is too small for me. Sad but I have never found fairtrade clothes that I could buy much as I would like to do so. Also it's a tad on the expensive side for my budget. So - much as it grieves me to say so - I shall have to stick with the second ...

Re: Use up the food you have: Commitment 2009

Well having looked at the store cupboard, I haven't been to the supermarket for three weeks except for bread (oh and a packet of washing soda to top up with). Sure I still have a few vegetables off the allotment and a few to use up. I suspect that there will need to be a run middle of next week for ...

Re: Wasting food

Hmm - too much money and too little sense comes to mind here. I've too little money and enough sense. Can't afford the waste any more and as there's only me to consult, well if I buy it I make me eat it.

Re: I fancy going on a rubbish reduction year

I love shopping too Alan but I've just looked at the money situation. There have been a lot of demands on the pocket recently (mostly things which have been put off till the last moment and needs must do something) which means that there will be a lot less of it happening. On my travels this week, I...

Re: Avoiding Supermarkets....

>>>> snip The only cleaning item I get in the supermarket is soda crystals. Everything else comes in bulk sizes either through a wholefood co-op or off the net (shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, washing up liquid, toilet cleaner, distilled vinegar, soda bicarbonate). It means I can buy better standar...

Re: I fancy going on a rubbish reduction year

I try to do large grocery shops on-line if I can with a list to hand. I find that this saves a lot of temptation.

Re: Avoiding Supermarkets....

That's a tiny bit expensive in comparison with the local supermarket with delivery thrown in. But it's one to remember as a useful source. I shall remember it. I shall consider it when the supply works down and see if a large measure would do good. I'd say that 25kg would do me for a couple of years...

Re: What to do down the allotment now?

The pigeon fanciers and chicken keepers have a lot of friends on our allotment site - we are all willing to take our wheelbarrows for such a local walk. Still got that pile of wood to move as it rained, snowed and froze in that order overnight. It's not been warm enough to clear things yet and there...

Re: Avoiding Supermarkets....

Correct - dog and cat poo DO NOT go on the compost heap - they are one of the big things not to do. Have a look here to see what to add and not - it's a good guide this one and it works But back on topic. Buying cheap for food and cleaning does no good. Been there, tried that. Being virtually vegan,...

Re: Don't buy anything new in 2009!

A whole week without buying anything new! Well except for 2 items of food. I even read the local paper in the library! Only another 51 and 4 days to go then to get to 2010.
