Re: 'Ish Christmas

While I like the ideas presented so far in this thread, I would like to put in a plug for not feeling obliged to observe Christmas at all. There are basically two reasons to observe Christmas: religious and cultural. I have nothing against those who find something of value in either of those reasons...

Re: Laptop without the Battery

I don't like the ergonomics of laptops. You are either too close to the screen or too far away from the keyboard, plus the keyboard is usually nasty and uncomfortable, and the function keys are never in the standard places. The pointing device (non-mouse) is usually crap. However, I bought one for t...

Re: Understanding Electricity

I second the advice above: learn about it before you start experimenting or you could wake up very dead. As a quick orientation to things electric... Electricity is easy to understand if you think of it like water flowing through a pipe. Water is under a certain amount of pressure and it flows at a ...

Re: What do you do to save energy?

Cut back on unnecessary travel. We collect all our errands and make one trip into town every two weeks. Take vacations to nearby destinations instead of going halfway around the world. Eat local produce when possible. We recently switched from imported orange juice to locally-grown apple juice. Make...

Re: WHAT THE HECK?

Teo, you know perfectly well why your thread was closed. It was explained to you more than once. The topic you wish to discuss, even if you somehow limited yourself to the legal aspects of it, is off topic for this forum. Now, you are in violation of the "being nice" rule as well. We all k...

GMOs contaminate organic flax

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/attack-of-the-triffids-has-flax-farmers-baffled/article1340838/ The purveyors of GMOs promised it couldn't happen. Monsanto sued and bankrupted its victims when it happened with canola in the past. This escape is so widespread, it is unlikely that anyone...

Re: Food for thought

It's not the technology per se. The problem is the idea that we can take without putting back. Sustainability requires restoring resources when we are finished with them. I think of it as the "gate rule". When out hiking, if you come across a gate in a fence, the rule is that you always le...

Re: wind turbine self-build course

According to the info on the website linked in the original post, the turbines are in sizes of 100W, 500W and 1000W. The 100 and 500 sizes would have limited use, but 1000W is a useful size. Just how useful depends upon how windy the proposed site is and what your electrical demands are. I know of o...

Re: Cheap ways to fertilise

I haven't yet decided what works best for me. However, some techniques that people here use are: - Gather seaweed. After storms, people go down to the beach and gather buckets of seaweed to dig in or top-dress their gardens. - Green manure. Because seaweed is low in nitrogen, people plant a green ma...

Re: Anyone had a frost yet?

Our coastal climate is very similar to the British climate. Around here, people leave most of their root crops like beets in the ground all winter. It seems that the ground is a better storage medium than just about any root cellar or other artificial storage system. People just dig them up as they ...
