Re: How are your tomatoes this year?

What varieties have you been growing? I live in the North West of Ireland and have had bumper crops. I tend to grow heirloom varieties and quite a few from Real Seeds as they supply tomato seeds suitable for areas with short growing seasons like they have in certain parts of America.

Re: 101 Uses for Excess Eggs

I love advocaat, I am an old Englishwoman, have you a recipe for it Dutch Dave. My German uncle made some once I remember, and it was so gorgeous If I ever have a glut of eggs (I can't keep up with demand from neighbours and villagers for duck and chicken eggs) I make all my christmas puddings and c...

Re: Pros and cons of keeping chickens on allotments

It's more likely that the problem is to do with cockerels. Recently an allotment had about 50 cocks crowing at all hours and the council had to serve enforcement orders to get the owners to get rid of them as they were annoying the neighbours. The cost of serving the enforcement orders is probably t...

Re: Can you move from the country to the town and be happy?

I had the opposite problem, I moved from a town to rural countryside. It is so quiet and dark at night. I had been used to the trains at the bottom of my garden running throughout the night, cars, police sirens (heard two in 4 years here), jet planes every couple of minutes and general hub bub assoc...

Re: Bitter plums

I found a little plum tree growing on my property, with small purple plums, don't think they were bullace (?) Made a plum and ginger crumble which was lovely, also made some jam and it is horrible, the worst jam I have ever made, it tasted ok to start with then there is a bitter aftertaste, never ex...

Re: Recipe for Irish Scones

I had a friend who lived in America and got a taste for toast, butter, jam and bacon all on the same bit of toast, bit weird to us, but I suppose it is what you get used to, I would have a poached egg on a home made English muffin or a nice bit of thick white toast.

Re: Make a motar mix for stone roof tiles?

We are using lime mortar at the moment for repointing our stone house we use one part hydraulic lime (St Astier Lime Co) to three parts sharp sand, it is important that you use the sharp sand when making the lime cement and not builders sand. You mix half the sand and half the lime in the mixer unti...

Re: Can anyone ID these 'bantam' chicks

We thought they may be pheasants, but having seen some young pheasants don't think they are, they also have grey legs and pheasants seem to have pink legs, they are really good at jumping up and trying to fly which is very odd, never had chicks that could do that from 3 weeks of age. I guess we have...

Re: Uses for chutney?

I would agree with that, I don't like it much, but if I have been given it I use it to add a bit of something else to curry or casseroles, the vinegar in it is also a useful tenderiser for cheaper cuts of meat for stew

Recipe for Irish Scones

These are really lovely scones, bit of a cross really between scones and rock cakes, but you find them all round Ireland, they are very quick to make, you can make a batch and have them cooked in about 20 minutes when you get used to making them, very handy if you suddenly find you have visitors com...
