Re: Empty supermarket recipes

Fly spray now! - shelves are empty everywhere but not sure if this is general or just our district - we are having a bush fly plague at the moment. Yesterday I left the ute windows down while working and the flies settled like a bee swarm on the inside; I had r to resort to an air compressor to clea...

Re: Empty supermarket recipes

Movement restrictions relaxing a little (bold & underline "little") so, amazingly, shelves are filling and remaining full. I am hearing that there seems to be a stable general increase in purchases of pots & pans etc. and in storage items (mostly plastic unfortunately). Tupperwares...

Re: Rusty tools

The old tools are well worth restoring - the steel in the modern ones is absolute rubbish. However, I am guilty of buying the modern and cheap hand saws for rough work like cutting fibre cement sheet and plasterboard. The good saws are too valuable to use for these jobs - I resharpen these myself so...

Re: Seed saving

More interesting from a sociological perspective than a plant breeding one; I have no doubt that Odsox is injecting a type (growth, taste, productivity) selection process into the process and that the "F1" he has now is not the F1 he started with. We breed (perhaps "produce" is a...

Re: Seed saving

not really complicated GA (although the home garden suppliers like to make it seem so) There are rhizobium products with multiple species coverage like the one I am using at the moment works for Faba bean, peas, vetch, and lentils; otherwise there are ones for specific species. They are really easy ...

Re: Empty supermarket recipes

It doesn't surprise me that they have been able to get work done and equipment supplied. I have been trying for nearly 12 months to get a new roof and some carpentry work done but just haven't been able to get Tradies to turn up - even though they keep saying they will - the local building boom mean...

Re: Seed saving

Anyone using Rhizobium inoculants on legume seed in the garden? I am currently inoculating vetch seed for larger scale planting and note the same product is also suitable for beans - essentially the product is a specific mix of Rhizobium and other bacteria important for their healthy growth; particu...

Re: Change of Lifestyle

Live in domestics are a rarity here but the increasing sales of cooking equipment (pots, pans etc.) evidenced by there scarcity in the shops, indicates some change to lifestyles. Interestingly, the guy across the street from the town house makes blinds is busier than ever - seems like folks are eith...

Re: Self Isolation

We're considering letting a few friends with little ruggies into the farm for a house bound isolation break. Limited travelling for exercise is allowable within the congregation / social distancing rules here so small family groups at a time should be OK; they can access without coming withing 200 m...

Re: Self Isolation

We are managing OK - not really a strict Isolation for us personally; we're not social butterflies (although miss the coffee shop and pub) and most of our families are a few hours drive away anyway. Working from home is annoying as my neighbours are also home bound - ergo the power tools in the shed...

Re: Ivy in compost

Plenty of chemical solutions Ina but doubtful if most of the products would be available in small enough quantities to be practical and most are persistent. In reality, physical removal is probably the best and easiest solution but needs to be persistent - most will be able to be removed fairly quic...

Re: Emptying the supermarket shelves

I seem to recall that one of the reasons that it was considered beneficial to "get it over with" while young was because of the added effects of contracting as an adult - mumps was rally not nice for the mature gonads, chickenpox turned into (or regenerated into) shingles and some measles ...

Re: Emptying the supermarket shelves

Some of the smaller town shops are now asking for proof of residency to make sure they keep enough on the shelves for the locals. Most of the larger town supermarket shelves are reasonable well stocked now - strangely the higher quality red meat cuts go first.

Re: Allotment the 2nd

I don't know how the wording is there (seems to be almost clonal worldwide) but here, in regards to farming, the rules are pretty well bent out of shape - farms are determined to be workplaces so multi-people gatherings etc. for farming are allowable; farms are also not public places (they are actua...

Re: Empty supermarket recipes

Not sure but it seems the outright stupidity in the markets is waning a little - rice, dried pulses, flour, pasta etc. are still in short supply as is toilet paper, tissues etc. but most other foodstuff is available. Protein is a little hard to get but, surprisingly, dairy, mushrooms, nuts and fish ...
