Re: hotbeds on gardeners' world
Hmm, would this work in a builders bag ? the cubic meter size ? bet that would generate a lot of compost. Think I could make space for something that big, and it would be sort of tidy, not spilling out at least. Would just horse manure, from stables using wood shavings and some straw rot down with n...

Re: hotbeds on gardeners' world
Fancy having a go at this, there is a stables near me so plenty of free manure available. What is the minimum size needed to be effective in heat generation ? does it need turning ? I guess not if growing on top. Could I just make a 'raised bed' on top of the pallet compost bins once filled ?

Re: Which new fruit trees ?
Went with another apple, Jupiter, and a Greengage. Definitely inspired by suggestions, so thanks for those. They have settled in nicely with some rhubarb, comfrey and blueberry underneath. Flowers to follow too in time.
Really dont think I have room for any more.....

Re: Vine Weevil
Thanks Jerry
So if I buy a big box of nematodes, do I have to use it all at once, or can I use a small amount [on house plants] and then save the rest of the contents for later applications ? Doesnt seem to be anyone selling small quantities, ie less than £10 plus shipping.

Vine Weevil
I spotted a 'critter' on the kitchen ceiling the other day. Didnt 'deal' with it tho [ie, squash it] and gave it no more thought till I was browsing a book and recognised it as vine weevil. Argh. I have a fair number of house plants in the area, and lots of seedlings in conservatory. How worried sho...

Re: How far can a dog walk?
Just like you would do for yourself; take it easy/gently, build up gradually, take a snack/drink if needed/not available, dont go on hot days [fat chance] watch for pad wear an generally be guided by her behaviour. May sleep well afterwards, but bet she will be fine. Cant see a single reason [apart ...

Re: seeds at a very good price
The other seed post reminded me of this one. I received the seeds from Alan Romans, but have had very mixed results, most of the sweet peas germinated, but the sunflowers were a total failure, other sunflowers from previous year germinated happily along side so it wasnt the conditions etc. Guess you...

Which new fruit trees ?
I am going to take [another] chunk out of the lawn this week  , extend/widen the bed around it and make room for 2 more fruit/apple trees. :flower: I currently have 1 pear, 1 plum, 3 apples; Discovery, James Grieve and Queen Cox. All are young and havent fruited yet [I have brutally stopped t...

Re: 2012 gardening goals...and new experiments you might try
Hmm, I like that system [easy2grow] but out of my price range. Had been toying with the idea of trying to make something similar with an old hose attached to water butt with a small drip hole drilled into hose at each plant pot. Anyone tried this ? got any suggestions. Serious trial and error to get...

North West England; who is out there ?
Hands up anyone in this area :grouphug: I am sniffing around looking for a perma type group, and failing. Been in touch with a couple of lovely folks on here and found a few more from freegle, all are saying ''if you start a group....'' so toying with the idea of having a gathering at least. Who wou...

Re: Switching to Co-op Bank, anyone else switched ?
Too bad, worth trying again ? I was suprised that they check you out first, altho it does make sense. No freebies now, hopefully good service tho, that is all I want. Altho if they offer a case of wine....

Switching to Co-op Bank, anyone else switched ?
I am embarking on a very scary process; changing bank accounts, switching after 25 years with Lloyds, who gave no loyalty consideration for mortgage app, and tried to rip me off with insurance, to Co-operative Bank, who are going to invest my money in ethical, ecological and fair ways, and hopefully...

Perma/ishy lifestyle conflicts anyone ?
Hi all. So I have been thinking about my lifestyle a bit recently; the two big parts [apart from kids and work] are my garden and perma/green/ishy/whatever lifestyle and my sport; I adventure race, run ultra/trail, mountain bike, climb, kayak and generally find any excuse to play outdoors. These may...

Re: Spent compost uses ?
Probably same plants in same greenhouse and pots. Not had any problems yet [like blight etc] and never really got into washing pots/steam bombing greenhouse. Heck, house cleaning is hard enough to fit in ! Not seeing that lot going into oven, so will just have to take chances I guess. Wasnt aware of...

Spent compost uses ?
I have finally cleaned out my greenhouse, dragged out all the old grow bags and tubs that had tomatoes in them. I have sieved and sacked all the compost, got about 8 sacks full I think. So what can I use it for ? planning on using pots again this year for toms, and a few other things, flowers and sa...
