Re: Gardeners please help

There have been trials of not pinching out side shoots on indoor toms as this reduces the risk of the blight spores entering the plants through the cut surface. I've not tried this myself but might look into it next year. All of my outdoor toms and a few indoor had blight this year, as did my potato...

Re: Hi from sunny Ireland

Thanks for the lovely welcome everyone!! Taking delivery of a donkey as we speak, it was keeping a neighbour's bull company but is no longer wanted - going to put in in our hay meadow with our sheep to keep the grass down over winter.

Re: Herb Garden Guidance

Use a free draining, low nutrient compost in the pots, it helps reduce waterlogging in the winter months which most herbs dislike. Mix in some grit too, about a 50/50 mix of compost and grit.

Celeriac which refuses to root up.....help!!

I am having prolems with my celeriac, about half of the plants i've got have set flowers. I dug a couple up of the flowering ones today and found that they have no swollen root at all. I have been pulling away the lower leaves as the plants grow as this is supposed to encourage root development. The...

Re: Goats

Hi Alice. We keep 2 goats at the moment. We were given a 2 yr old goatling, but as they are herd creatures a single goat will often form a far too strong attachment to its keepers, it'll see you as its herd member!! We bought another several weeks later as she had kidded and we wanted to have a milk...

Re: how much to feed a pig

Hi. We were told it was a pound per pig per day of a grower's ration too, but up to a max of 6lbs. We give our pigs half ration per day and make up the rest with whatever glut of veg we have at the moment, along with cooked potatoes which our local potato farm sells us for 50c per 25kg bad (its the ...

Re: what to do with a glut of eggs????

We pickle lots of eggs but I have read somewhere that they are ok to freeze (out of their shells). I keep meaning to try this when we have a glut of eggs but have never managed to do it as my eldest is a fanatical cake baker and uses them all up!!

Hi from sunny Ireland

Hello.....My husband and I, along with 3 children packed up and moved to a 2 acre smallholding in the south east of Ireland 6 months ago in a bid to have a different way of life than the one we were experiencing in the UK. We have 2 goats that provide milk, hens and ducks for both meat and eggs, pig...
