Re: Council compost ?
You'll find that more commercial compost producers are turning to council waste as part of their product if you read the small print on the packaging (20% natural products from composted waste). Did you hear that B&Q had to recall a batch of their organic tomato feed last season because it was c...

Re: This morning......
This year three of the grandchildren are having their last of the childhood parties - on boy (21) and his sister (18) are having a joint do to save money and the next one down is 18 three months later. I've decided to do scrap books about the year of their births for them. Lots of information so far...

Re: Clay Soil!!!
Spuds will help to break it up. It's not the spuds that help to break it up you know but the digging over before planting, the adding of compost and manure to make the crop grow, the earthing up as the plants develop, the digging the spuds out and then the final digging over for the next crop that ...

Re: what's in y'pots?
I've a long hardstanding on my allotment and I do put lots of tubs on it. Because it's warm and sunny the parsnips love the tubs there. Carrots I grow in tubs too. And a few potatoes. I'm going to put borage in tubs along a sunny hedge on the plot this year as herb space is a bit limited. At the mom...

Re: Clay Soil!!!
Clay is a fertile soil despite being hard to work - it will grow roses, root vegetables a treat and brassicas too. Don't give up on growing things on it because you haven't yet added much compost and manure to it. You have to look long term with clay. It will have a bit of a shorter growing season t...

Re: Lost or survived the weather?
Lost the spring cabbages which were too far forward and also it looks as if the spring cauliflowers are not going to do anything. It's possible that the lemon balm has also been permanently damaged. But otherwise all seems well.

Re: projects for 2010
Are you lot going to be knitting money as you go along to get all your projects done? There's the bathroom, tiny connecting hall and bedroom to redecorate after the bath in the flat upstairs rioted a couple of times and, along with a maverick downpipe from the guttering along the building'...

Re: Too much compost!
You need other things than veg peelings to make compost. I'd have a good read of this information which will help you to get your compost to rot down fairly rapidly. You should be looking at all the other things listed on the link above along with all the information that you are given on making com...

Re: oh BOO FLIPPING HOO
i don't know if any of you have noticed but news channels always seem to focus on "non stories" like this - but do they ever go to poor people and report on their PROBLEMS ?? - RARELY IT SEEMS - oh yea we hear about people who get themselves into problems through their own faults - such a...

Re: EU ( hock - spit ) - bin police ??
I'm going to sound like a rabid extremist, but I think that we are simply being given too much - too much money, too many excuses, too much reinforcement for the consumerist idea. Mike "We work for it, we can afford it, we have a right to it" is an attitude encouraged by lazy politicians ...

Re: EU ( hock - spit ) - bin police ??
Ah but there are two points that you are both missing: 1. If the consumer doesn't buy there is nothing for industry to make - result? No economic recovery to pay back the borrowings. 2. Landfill space is running out so there's nowhere to put the rubbish - result? Stop producing rubbish - which will ...

Re: EU ( hock - spit ) - bin police ??
Oh come on brett, let's be fair. We need more job opportunities. It'll be ideal for the uneducated yoof of today having to go and intrude into people's rubbish bins. Oh and it should give the rodent operatives more opportunities to charge us to clear our properties of unwanted visitors. :m...

I'd be a bit worried about no plastics thinking about it. Some of us have false teeth, wear glasses and use hearing aids ...............
