Re: Seed saving

Might not be a disadvantage - many of our "new" varieties originate from plants that have naturally diverged from the norm - your new variety (the Oddy Onion?) may be a ground breaking development.

Re: Empty supermarket recipes

Its baaaaack!!!! - One state in Oz has had a significant spike in positive cases following some relaxing of the rules and has gone into high levels of quarantine and movement restriction again. Within 2 days the toilet paper, rice, flour etc. had disappeared off the shelves nationwide

Re: Eco friendly insecticide

I caught a webinar based on the nitrogen cycle a couple of days ago (actually Mrs Weedo did and roped me in to watch also) One of the interesting things that was discussed was insect pests and their functions - basically and without going into the complex details, they have the same function as pred...

Re: Bamboo advice please!

From the problem I guess this is a Rhizomateous species - Phyllostachys spp. possibly Cutting it down will not affect it in the slightest - the growing points etc. are all underground. So, constant surveillance and digging is your non - chemical solution (salt is a chemical also). Chemical wise, let...

Re: Eco friendly insecticide

We are finding (although just on the tip of learning about this) that the best insecticide is to not use insecticides, mix plant species, nourish them properly and allow the "weeds" outside the beds to flourish (they are really only an issue if allowed to set seed) As mentioned in another ...

Re: For saving money around the house!

Clothes for us can be up to 3 sets per day - one for the office, one for around the house etc. and one for the farm in the cow poo, mud, grease, oil and so on. They don't all get changed each day but business shirts, farm stuff (depending on the job on the day) and two pairs of socks do. During lock...

Exactly Ina - Rhodies are also a problem in the Victorian Dandenong Randges where it is high, cold, wet and fertile, Coffee in the Northern NSW sub-tropical forests, sorghum on the mid-west plains, cotton in the tropical north and so ad infinitum.

Re: For saving money around the house!

Keeping the Covid restrictions! Not travelling to and from work saving 50l fuel a week, no cafe lunches on the run, less clothing (one change a day instead of two) and laundry, limited food supplies so stretch what you can get and use everything you grow, tradies working at realistic rates just to g...

Re: Eco friendly insecticide

Sorry guys; I can't recommend the use of Neem products in any form - in Oz they have been widely commercially planted for oil production and in most cases escaped and become seriously invasive. Please be aware that even "natural" products can have serious negative environmental effects.

Re: Apples, pears and blackcurrants

AS GA mentioned, much of the problem stems from water and feeding. Like people, plants that are incorrectly nourished become susceptible to disease so check watering and nutrition; avoid getting too much nitrogen in the mix and look to the micro-nutrients. If your patch has been overused / abused by...

Re: Growing runner beans

I know that the broad-acre cropping folks around here will sow beans / peas in the same paddocks in consecutive years - but they apply multiple pesticides, fungicides and fertilisers so there is no possible way any organism other than the crop is going to survive to affect them.

Hi Yesterday, in total frustration, (in OZ we use another term but it is not fit for this forum) I pushed the "Had enough -getting out of here button" which means I will no longer have access to my current URL /server and Email etc. Sometime ago I created "Weedo2" as a backup pre...

Re: attach a foldaway table

I don't know if one attached to a wall really has a "proper" name unless you would call it a drop-leaf table - we did have an old wooden folding table years ago that was called a campaign table - designed to be packed up and moved with the Officers "camping" furniture during mili...

Sunn Hemp was a qualified success - it grew to over 2 metres but quite spindly (lack of direct sun?) It flowered and grew pods but did not produce seed (no bees?, wrong bees?) Nothing in the mixed sowing grew roots deeper than about 3 inches, including the Daikon radish, despite deep digging and wat...

Re: What are you harvesting now?

First frost this morning, only light but a little early in the season. Not harvesting much - the last capsicums is about all. I have two fig trees and two loquat trees ready to plant out now that the weather is cooling off.
