Re: Summer's coming
Summer was last week. (I hope I'm exaggerating!) Now that the solstice is here, summer is over. We had torrential rain yesterday.

Re: Summer's coming
May so far has been cold and wet. We struggle to get one sunny day in a row. When I was griping about the weather earlier, my wife said not to worry, by the end of May, all the leaves will be out on the trees. NOT!! There are buds everywhere, but their development has been stalled. Almost nothing ha...

Re: Summer's coming
Strawberries already? WOW!!
Yes, summer is coming. I just hope it's on a weekend this year! ;) We had about 25cm of snow this week. It's melting, thank goodness, but we have at least a month of mud before spring starts.

Re: Silly Season Self Sufficiency
Ina, sorry to hear you are under the weather. February is a long time to get it looked at! I hope you are better before then. We don't do Christmas. We just opted out of it. The available interpretations are either religious or commercial, and we don't subscribe to either. I put up a few lights, bec...

Re: Self sufficient skills List
I worked as a carpenter's helper a few years ago, so I am pretty handy with building skills, including wiring. I can make a generator transfer switch for $10 that may be ugly but is just as safe as the store-bought one costing $200. I have built two awesome woodsheds and have perfected the design, s...

Re: Strawberries
Well, I ate the last strawberry out in the garden, and then put them all to bed for the winter, with some compost and a layer of straw mulch. It was a much better season than last year.

Re: Strawberries
I assume your "day neutral" strawberries are the same as our "ever bearing" ones. Yes. "Day neutral" and "everbearing" mean the same thing. year I planted a "runnerless" variety called Pink. ... Anyone with experience of these types and breaking the...

Strawberries
We are still harvesting strawberries from our day-neutral plants! In future, I wouldn't get day-neutral varieties, because they produce such a small crop, but it is cool harversing strawberries at the end of September. The cherry tomatoes are pretty good, too. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1940/300...

Re: Does anyone know.....
It ought to be possible to overwinter the plant indoors. I've no idea how well it will do, or how big it will get. However, since you know the seeds are viable, save some of them to plant in the spring.

Re: New Person Saying Hello
Hello, Ascerti, and welcome. The important thing is that you have the awareness and the urge to do something about it. I felt the same way when I was your age. I was lucky enough to have a spouse who felt as I did, so we moved to an island off the west coast of Canada where there were lots of hippie...

Re: A bit of pruning
Apparently, the previous owners liked junipers. We have taken out lots of them. They spread everywhere, and look really ugly. There are still quite a few to go!

A bit of pruning
There was a large, gnarly, ugly juniper shrub that had to go. I had already cut off most of the branches with a small electric chainsaw. But, when it came time to take out the remaining big branches and the trunk, the job needed the big Husky. I swear it has put on 20 lbs in the last couple of years...
