Re: pig costs and advice please
Hi I think that the main problem with keeping pigs as far as cost effectiveness goes, is the feed . If you are just planning to fatten them for the table, then it's really down to you, you feed them until you are happy with the size of the pig compared to what you have spent on feed. Vet's fees shou...

Re: Need some help with our girls
Hi I must admit, I'm slightly baffled by this one. Normally I would blame excessive feather pecking on boredom and/or lack of grass or soil to turn over. I've spoken to a few other smallholders around me about it and the general consensus, is that once they've got a taste for it it's difficult to st...

Interesting question Brendya, I think you'd need to ask another Texan, as I imagine what would tempt in a self suficient Brit would not be the same for your average Texan. I like the idea of a two for one breakfast though    a bogoff breakie. I wish they did that round here. :...

I guess a lot depends on how old she is. but I find that younger children will embrace livestock and gardening if given a bit of freedom with it all, and are allowed to do a few things that are more "adult" using tools, having their own bit of land etc One tactic I have seen used with a ma...

Re: buy a field?
Another option is to talk to a Land Agent. I rent a couple of acres through an agent, it belongs to the church, and he sorts out the rental for them. I've no idea what the prices would be like around you. But, for pasture I pay bewteen £30 - £60 per acre per year, dependent on what I want to use it ...
Re: Turkey
I know this is an old thread, but it has some of the info I wanted to know, but havbe a another question. I am doing a few turkeys this year for x-mas, but wanted to know, roughly how long is reasonable between killing and cooking before the meat is spoiled or they need to be frozen. The reason I as...
