the good thing about mushroom compost is that ,after you've grown the mushrooms you can dig it into the ground...well everywhere except the spud patch

what sort of flies are they because I thought some sorts of flies were good
for the compost. Why not put the compost somewhere out of the way and not worry about the flies

i asked the mushroom farm near here how they make their compost and they have bales of straw which the soak continuously and them mix with chicken manure and turn for about 2 weeks. We collect the spent mushroom copmpost on the allotments so we go regularly to the farm

i grew squashes ,courgettes and pumpkins last year from saved seeds and they did very well....but I didn't put them in this early...March I think. Yesterday we were eating one of the squashes and I saved the seeds for planting later

thanks for all the info Shirlz2005. I have found slips for sweet potatoes in the organic gardening catalogue....www.OrganicCatalogue.com They are expensive at£10.95 but I am going to try them as I love them.

I use old carpet too and it works well for a time but eventually the weeds grow through it ...but at that stage you can just replace it

Hi, Libby and welcome to the site. I am hoping to keep bees this spring .I have asked the local council and have permission to keep them on the allotments. If it's ok with you I will be picking your brains over the coming months. But first two of us are looking for a beekeeping course in our area.
