Re: Green building/eco village in Bristol. Fancy it???

Have you looked at "the Self-build book", Jon Broome and Brian Richardson, Green Books, Bideford, 1991? It's a bit out of date and some of the recommendations for Segal Houses don't meet current building regs, but there is a section guiding anyone through initial stages as well as some ins...

Re: Zero waste town in Japan

Dear Sian, I've agree with you that a lot of people are opting for the easy options rather than take actions that would make a real difference. But one step at a time in the right direction is better than nothing at all. Apart from Defra the report doesn't attribute the quotes, only vague references...

Re: Zero waste town in Japan

Dear Sian,

Very interesting, also some other thought provoking stuff on the same BBC page. Did you read the bit entitled "Is it worth going green"?

Perhaps it might start an interesting thread would bring up new ideas we could all share on the matter .....

Re: State funeral for Thatcher?

Dear DominicJ, Is it accurate to describe those with different opinions as COMMUNISTS? A malodourously unpleasant whiff of McCarthism seems to have entered the banter. What next? A witch hunt to cleanse the pages of the ISH forum of dissenting voices? There seems to be a dangerously authoritarian st...

Re: State funeral for Thatcher?

Dear Millymollymandy, Sliced Bread and the Holy Margaret!! How appropriate! Cheap, nasty, lacking in taste and almost totally devoid of any goodness!!!! Wished I'd thought of making that comparison! Much prefer the Bakuninesque stance adopted by Rod in Japan .... Hang the last politician with the gu...

Re: State funeral for Thatcher?

Dear MKG
10 years ago would have been good, perhaps 25 and it might have caused less damage?

State funeral for Thatcher?

Monday 14/7/08, Radio 4 PM programme follows up report in The Mail on Sunday (it would be!) concerning spending public money on a State Funeral for the unlamented Saint Margaret Hilda (aka Snotty Roberts). Being that the woman engineered an unnecessary war, caused unemployment for 3 million, has had...

Re: 101 professions for a self-sufficientish, thinking person

Hello LBR Having paid off our mortgage, and finding ourselves set up with furniture, goods, chattels, garden etc. we've downsized on the employment front. I work as a supply teacher, taking work when we need money, the weather is bad, the school is one I have a good relationship with, or they need h...

Way to deal with loads of fresh or stored beans. Fasolia!

Dear Maggienetball, Yeh, I've seen him. Big bugger, able to leap tall buildings at a single bound (well, garden fences anyway!) How he got on my neighbours shed roof to leave decomposing meat from someones' dustbin would have been a sight to behold. Admiration for his ability to survive has to be te...

No, NOT just for crapping. The original posting posed the problem I had with an urban fox. It ended with "looking forward to realistic suggestions". Yours was neither realistic nor a suggestion, more in the line of a catcall from the back row. May I refer you to Ratty whose posting demonst...

thanks everyone!

Tried:- * pee-ing * borrowed a friends dog *sat up late with a load of pebbles to throw (dozed off due to taking a bottle of wine as companion). So far chicken wire frames around the beds has been fairly effective, however, the fox has retalliated by crapping on the paths instead! Sadly the .22 airg...

Urban fox pests (I tried to post this one yesterday ......)

Does anyone know of a good way to deter urban foxes? One has recently taken to digging up my raised beds to eat the earthworms. As a consequence of this feeding frenzy I have lost onions, leeks, garlic, turnips, runners and patience. The prospect of posting animated cardboard cutouts of mounted toffs...
