Re: Dried Beans

They look amazing - all from the same packet of seeds? The black one's look like turtle beans - my favourite.

Re: Busy day

The cheeses are progressing nicely. One was salted on the outside and left to air-dry. That's developed an almost rubbery texture - sort of gouda-esque texture. A teeny taste promises well. The other two were crumbled and salted then re-pressed. These are much softer. One has been "washed" with the ...

Re: Broccoli

I love these freebies. We found an escaped plant in the greenhouse a few years back, which was obviously some sort of brassica. I think it must have been out of season for growing anything much else (toms etc) because we left it, occasionally harvesting a few leaves. It was absolutely delicious, pre...

Re: Busy day

when I'm at home I get paid work done and things around the house/garden too I used to as well, Cassiepod. We live in a very long, single storey building with the shop at one end and the kitchen at the other. When GA mark 1 was open I often left it unattended and did stuff in the house. Folks would...

Busy day

I'll start off with a quick moan. I've re-opened my Green Aura shop. I now sell anything I can make - knitted, crocheted, sewn etc. The moan part is that, given the layout of this building, I actually have to go to work and have no time in the house during the day so most of my Ish things aren't get...

Re: Growing in 2018 weather

The apricot tree which has only ever produced one apricot is looking much healthier since rehoming so, as long as we manage to shift it to its new home before it blossoms, we might just get a few next year. If we don't it will be looking for a new home as I'm not even that fussed about apricots - I ...

Re: RAIN !!

We had a few days of dreich (cloudy and miserable with a bit of rain) but yesterday the sun came out and it's been glorious. We hadn't realised just how dry everything still was, given the previous weather, but we had to do some serious watering yesterday evening. Everything looks much happier this ...

Re: Liquorice

A friend of mine, also German, dissolves this salt licorice you speak of in vodka and serves it up at her New Year party. Foul and lethal, in equal measure, in one shot glass.

Re: Growing in 2018 weather

So basically anything that's puts up lots of sugar is good this year. In that case I'm pleased we didn't bother. The toms are doing really well though - those Stupice are great, we'll definitely grow them next year.

Re: What's wrong with fennel?

I like fennel, bulb and herb, but as a background flavour and cooking it helps too.

Maybe that's my problem with licorice, it is the flavour - no subtle background hint, just in your face licorice.

Re: Hello from Meath

I've already said hello but hello again  I find th self-sufficiency thing varies by person, time and circumstances. We all find our own elements that we can enjoy doing or fit in with life's demands. But if you want to get back into it you're in the right place. Have a look around, we've got to...
