Re: Would you ever burn nappies in a woodburner?
I have read somewhere that the gel in the nappies that does the absorbing is quite a good thing to put into flower pots/hanging baskets to hold water. You can buy a commercial product to do the same thing. Whether you'd want to use the gel out of a used nappy though is another matter

Re: Would you ever burn nappies in a woodburner?
I'm with Andrea - I wouldn't burn any kind of plastic. It just puts too many funky chemicals in the air. There's been a big debate around here (Gloucestershire) about the viability of a waste incinerator. I heard some of it on Radio 4 a month or so back. It would seem that they will be burning plas...

Re: Use by dates
Give it a chance, sometimes it can take a while to get going. If it doesn't then just add some new yeast, the old stuff will just settle to the bottom. No need to throw it all out.

Re: Beekeeper Looking for Hive Space
My wife says one hive isn't ideal but a lot of people do keep just the one. Having two allows you a bit of scope if you lose a queen and other reason but there is no hard and fast rule. You could keep a mating nuc (whatever one of those is) so you had a spare queen and eggs.

Re: Alternative to Co-op bank
I had a similar experience with a normal account with the Co-op in the early 90s. They were so bad I went back to Lloyds. They closed the local branch in Cheltenham (of all places), they wouldn't give me a cheque guarantee card for over a month and only gave us a cash point card. So we were unable t...

Re: I'm sure that's not the point
For them to have reduced their overall consumption they would need to be using less electricity than before they had the panels because we have to take into account the embodied energy of the panels themselves, thus if there useage remains the same amount of units as before their actual consumption...

Re: How do I make GOOD wine?
I've found that I prefer "country" wines to grape wines. My wife prefers them sweet and I prefer a medium to slightly dry. I usually end up putting about 2.5lb of white sugar in. I've tried glucose once, didn't seem to make any appreciable difference and I think I had a go at using invert ...

Re: How do I make GOOD wine?
As far as my palate for wines is concerned there are 4 flavours, sweet, dry, red and white. I have made some brilliant wines and some absolute carp too. I think the thing to do is to make notes and if you make a good one then you can duplicate it. Unfortunately I'm so disorganised I can never be bot...

Yes but surely you would do rainwater harvesting for the benefit of the planet rather than because it's forced upon you because you have a water meter installed. Besides which there were only two of them in a socking big house. THey can't have used that much water could they?

Re: Unwanted links in posts on this forum
Aha, I'm using Firefox and there was an addon enabled which converts useful phrases to links. So it was at my end, mea culpa and all that. Now I've got to find out who installed it!

Unwanted links in posts on this forum
I posted something about rainwater harvesting a couple of days ago. In one of the posts I included the phrase "my family". When I viewed the post a day later I found that the phrase "my family" had become a hyperlink to a website selling stuff. In fact the website changes everyti...
