Try making him quick breads with applesauce, prune puree, etc used as the fruit and in place of most of the fat in the recipe. Give him cut up apples or pears to eat. Halved or quartered grapes are good too. Pulverize vegetables and hide them in other foods. It's tasty to put grated zucchini into to...

I am having a hard time getting below 17 on the challenge. I guess I should have picked 20 instead of 12 for the amount  or then would we have been wanting it changed to 25??? The other thing that's hard to decide is where to try to choose local items to be more SSish and where to choose items...

That sounds like a great programme. I've heard that Cuba is far ahead of pretty much every other urban area with growing food on available urban land. Germany and Russia also have good home garden systems for urban people though not quite as sustainable as the Cuban one. Both have small buildings on...

Not sure about the best way to clean the carpet, but I'd ask the vet if the cat needs to be treated for the oil it ingested while cleaning its feet.

Mrs Fribble, it sounds as though your challenge might already be happening. Sounds really rough. If all went well, how would you envision people there working to gether to make things better for everyone? What year would you model their lifestyle after? current time - I don't see the point of forcin...

Thanks for so many helpful ideas. I think they will all be useful for helping the new gardeners achieve some steady success. What do you think it's easiest for the new people to begin with? Usually it seems that people have a lot of success with potatoes, leeks, peas, and onions. Which cabbage famil...

I agree about how it would be good to do as much of this as possible with local foods and whole foods. Doing a similar sort of challenge in September with access to one's garden produce would make a huge difference too. And tips and recipes would be appreciated. One of the things people have comment...

Favourite basketry making books

A friend taught me how to make a basic round basket. I'd like to make some other shapes such as a strong harvest basket with a handle and a flatter, shallower one that would be good for one layer of tomatoes. What books would be the most helpful? Or maybe there is a good website with how tos?

We've had this same challenge on other garden forums and lists for the last several years. I thought people here might have fun with it if they live in an area with the 5 seed packs for a pound sales or bulk seed bins. (Andy that started the forum even used to be on one of the lists--he might still ...

1940s/50s Recipes for Rations and Local foods

I am looking for some 1940s/50s recipes focusing on local foods and rations. Recommendations for websites, WWII books or modern reprints, or blogs with experimental reenactments would be welcomed. A few I've found so far are http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3171348.stm Cheese Soup Woolton Pie Spong...

Clever SSish strategies from 1940s/1950s or similar

For the last couple of weeks, I have been looking for a website I saw a couple of years ago that had great instructions on mending and refashioning clothing. It had some reprints of 1940s and 1950s info. Does anyone happen to remember the url for that for have it in your favorites? I would like to u...

£1 Garden Challenge

This is a challenge to see how much you can grow from £1 of seeds or tubers. You could do the £1 challenge garden three ways. You can get all of the seeds and tubers yourself, or you can work with a group. For the greatest challenge, try finding everything your self. Or if you’d like more select...
