I like them mashed, too - but they need a lot of butter, I think - or roasted, but that's a bit of a bother for just one person! Often you just get them boiled, with absolutely nothing else in them. And if they used frozen neeps, you might as well not bother...

A different way of cooking swedes

As MMM called swedes a "boring" vegetable (see Hints...), and I actually quite agree, at least as far as how they are usually cooked here, I thought I might pass on the way my mum made them, and I still do. They not only look more interesting, they also taste better - I think so, anyway. S...

Lazy Shepherd's pie Good for using up leftovers, or for half-preparing the day before! Sweat chopped onions in oil, add some sliced mushrooms if you like. Mix with cooked carrots (or other veg), tin or two of baked beans, ground black pepper, chopped parsley. Stick in greased oven-proof dish, top w...

Tip to self - order a Xmas pudding on-line. It must be cheaper. I've already spent €10 buying a small pot of glace cherries, a small pot of candied peel and a can of Guinness! Help! Or tell your friends in Britain who are desperately trying to think of a suitable present for you to send you a...

Beany recipes

Vegetarian Pasta Sauce Bolognese-type Sweat off chopped onions in olive oil. Add red lentils (about 30 – 50 g per person I'd say, depending on how greedy everybody feels – that's 1 – 2 ounces), coarsely grated carrot, finely chopped celery (or grated celeriac), chopped courgette...

I often go away to VegiVentures Christmas House Parties , which always have a nice relaxed mix of people to spend time with, and good vegetarian cooking. Stew, I'll have to look into that - I've always thought of going away somewhere where I can be reasonably sure of meeting like-minded people! How...

I mean, I'm sure that's what people did before the advent of washing machines, and I can't be that greasy! Actually, before the advent of washing machines people used to boil their clothes... At least the white stuff. Our house must have been one of the last that was built with a huge boiler ...

Hi Ina, Could you post recipes for lentil and bean shepherd's pie and lentil Bolognese sauce? I love both these dishes but want to cut out red meat and eat more vegetarian food. I'm not ignoring your request - it's just that I usually don't use a recipe, so I have to think about this! I'll try to p...

Lyds, My other half did some agency lorry driving for Yeo Valley and he told me they were moving the production to France/Switzerland. It does make me cross when they do this and still pretend to be producing the product from the UK. Thanks for making that public - I rather like Yeo Valley, but I c...

I usually get invited by some well-meaning folks for Christmas - they don't understand that I'm really not into that at all. This year I've decided to tell everybody that I've already been invited by somebody else... Presents? One of my friends gets a concert ticket (Proclaimers, in case you were wo...

So after all that, are you now small-boned or are you consuming double the quantity of delivered-to-the-lottie pizzas? Maybe you are small-boned despite eating twice as many pizzas? Hey, I'll have to try that diet! Why not build a pizza oven on your lottie, a proper one fired with wood...
