Re: chooks not perching

Our perches are always wider than that, though we have mostly full size chickens. All the bantams we've had have always been a bit of a law unto themselves,in my experience they are far hardier than their full size cousins and I would be inclined to let them do their own thing! When we had a few hund...

Re: What is poverty?

Millims beautifully expressed. When i first joined the forum I said I thought I was the richest person in London (and here in London there is a lot of very rich people) because of our allotment. When friends and family gather there, as we often do, we are in a different world, it feeds the soul as ...

Re: What is poverty?

There have been a number of very good contributions to this thread, especially around control of ones life and opportunities. One thing I think we've missed out is equality. The happiest societies are the more equal ones. If everyone around is in the same boat, people are happier. When you are sat ...

Re: Please can I keep my old motor ?

The scheme makes sense when you look at mileage and emissions. Doing 20,000 miles a year in an old Volvo is much more polluting than doing the same in a new car. Doing very low mileage in an old polluting car is just a p*** in the ocean, but for millions of cars doing high mileage it makes sense. I...

Please can I keep my old motor ?

This might seem a bit wierd, but it's been on my mind for ages, and Lucia is fed up with me going on about it so if no-one else is interested I'll know she's right. When the Govt. brought in the 'scappage scheme' it was said that as well as flogging a load more moronic charachterless tin boxes, the sc...

Re: What is poverty?

This is a really interesting thread. It's always seemed to me that how much you earn/own in matierial terms, has less relevance than the degree of control you have over your life.Obviously in abject poverty you have no control whatsoever, but many people who earn /own considerable amounts fall into th...

Re: willow as fuel

My mate works for the enviroment agency so gets his willow for free(clearing riverbanks etc.)He seasons it for 2 years and runs a multifuel rayburn on it,chucking half a bucket of anthracite in last thing to keep it going. It provides cooking ,hot water and heat for a 2 bedroomed bungalow.

Hello from South Shropshire

Been doing the self-suff thing since the early 70's,inspired by my old man.Long term pig keeper(British Lops),free-range poultry, and milking goats.Leaving 6 acres and common grazing in two months and shifting three young children, two dogs and three goats to Italy .I'm getting on a bit, need to 'hobby...
