Re: Autumn!

Must admit, I always thought cob nuts and hazel nuts were one and the same. Cracking them in front of the fire sounds nice but I think I'd probably end up eating more than I saved

Re: Autumn!

You need to catch them when the nut is formed but before the shell is too hard. They taste sweet and slightly nutty, not unlike raw peas. If the shell is hardening the brown husk round the kernal can tend to be on the bitter side but if you eat one that's just right I bet you look for another..

Re: wild food field guide

Hi Daniele Foodwise (in the UK), a good start is Food For Free by Richard Mabey (published by Collins under natural history). You may also wish to consider seperate books if you intend to make use of wild mushrooms. How To Identify Edible Mushrooms by Patrick Harding, Tony Lyon & Gill Tomblin (a...

Re: Autumn!

Autumn's the season for me regarding foraging. Yesterday's wayside snack saw some of the last sweet green hazelnuts (once brown they're too tough to crack in my teeth..) and already the wild mushies are making a welcome show. Just wish it would stop raining and be less humid.

Re: What have you found lately?

I found this near the river Trent after the 2000 floods. It's the business end of an old oak pile which I think would originally have been driven into the gravel beds to form part of a navigation structure. Water-logged and encrusted in stones it about dislocated my back when I first found it.

Re: Photo Competition - win a signed copy of the paperback Bible

For a number of weeks I was aware of a perky field mouse in the garden but then a neighbours cat did it's job and had her. Presumably hunger prompted these two survivors to launch themselves prematurely into the big wide world. Not quite weaned, at first my wife hand-fed them every four hours on a m...

Re: road kill, common people what have you eaten?

Have feasted on wood pigeon, pheasant, rabbit, hare and the occasional mallard. In all cases I check out the heart and liver and if not damaged they make tasty assides. Re Ina, roadkill for vegetarians, I tend to think of it as roadspill. Usually it's potatoes, onions or carrots tumbled from slightl...

Puffballs galore

For interest, it looks to be a good year for puffballs. I found ten or so loitering in one field last week and this morning happened across what must be a puffball hypermarket. There's got to be at least a hundred dotted about this one large field and nearly as many again in a nearby field. I've nev...
