What I'm up to

I'm as guilty as the next person of falling into lurking mode when forum participation falls below a critical mass. Rather than post on an existing thread, I thought I'd start a new one, 'cause it makes the forum look busier. ;) My wife and I moved a month and a half ago. We had been in an "int...

Re: New Farmers Gathering

On the remote chance that there are lurkers on here who were planning to attend the New Farmers Gathering, it is only right that I pass on the information that the event has been cancelled due to poor preregistration. Bummer, man.

New Farmers Gathering

This will be too far away for most of you, but, you never know, there might be lurkers in Nova Scotia... I just learned that, two days after we move to our new place, they are having a 'New Farmers Gathering' ( http://newfarmersgathering.harvesthand.com/ ) not far away. Yay! There will prob...

Re: Planning for being self sufficientish in 2015

Where are you moving to? I'd love to have asparagus and raspberries, but I think my garden is too small to have all those things. Hall's Harbour, NS. Same province, same part of Canada, but a community that is moch mure our style than where we are. Our theme song these days is, "We gotta get o...

Re: Planning for being self sufficientish in 2015

With moving and all its uncertainties, I didn't think we were going to get much of a garden in. I just had a visit to the new place, and there are raspberries, something that may be blueberries, rhubarb, and asparagus in the garden. We'll get there in time to sample the rhubarb and asparagus. Have t...

Re: Why are cardboard coffins so expensive?

The entire funeral industry is based on gouging people when they are the most vulnerable. They know that the recently-bereaved are probably in shock and will not argue about price, no matter how exorbitant it is. If someone does argue, they will say, "You've got to have it, so pay up." Whe...

Re: Google

Firefox gives you a choice of search engines. On the toolbar search window, there is a magnifying glass icon. Click that and you should get a list of available search engines. Select Google and voila!

Re: T'internet woes

I'm glad you got it sorted. My "broadband" Internet comes as a wireless signel across the water. It is advertised as being 1.5Mbps, but it rarely gets anywhere close. The other day, I measured it at 280Kbps, barely faster than dial-up. We will be moving soon, and one of the nice things abo...

Re: Drive a stake through the heart of winter, please!

Here's the snow pile at the corner of our driveway. This was after the snowplow got stuck and we had to bring in a front-end loader to move all the snow. It left this 3-metre high pile. The shovel is there in preparation for my taking the top metre off it to reduce the size of future drifts. http://...

Drive a stake through the heart of winter, please!

Please, won't someone kill this undead winter? The gazillionth blizzard of the year is howling across my back yard. I literally lost count after 7 or 8 blizzards. I had to go out first thing this morning and re-shovel the path to the back door so the hound could go out and pee. The snow plow operato...

Woo-hoo! Found the Good Life

I found a DVD set of 3 seasons of The Good Life and, since I had some Christmas money to blow, I ordered it. Ever since I joined here, I've wanted to see the series.

Re: How Selfsufficientish were you in 2014

Not too good on the reducing our carbon footprint scale: we pretty much have to drive anywhere. It's half an hour to the nearest town, and an hour to the next one. We did have an impressive haul of carrots and parsnips. Since we also got a generous supply of same from our CSA grower, we pretty much ...

Re: Email etiquette

For emails sent to an office, it is considered normal to send to all recipients with all addresses visible. Most offices do not require or benefit from secrecy: typically, the employees' email addresses are published internally. If you are using a personal email address for work, you should have a s...
