Re: Teenage Daughter!!!!

I know events like this can really p*ss you off. but just remember that's she's probably still one of a very small minority of kids who know where food comes from and how it's prepared - the odd missed meal's worth it knowing she'll grow up to cook her own food, not reach for the ready meal and micr...

Re: Much cheapness needed...

You can make all sorts of bean and lentil pates for lunches. While warm they also make good toppings for jacket spuds. And dhal of course. If you like chinese, twice cooked pork is yummy (one of my current faves). Best with belly pork, chop up, boil in water with a little five spice and soy sauce. T...

Re: Tax and volunteering

If you're self-employed you have to pay class 2 NI contributions - gives you entitlement to some sickness benefit and such like. I know you won't be self-employed but it might be worth finding out if you should pay it for the year, by way of insurance. It's not a huge amount - just over £100 for a y...

Re: dying?

This has some good info http://www.pioneerthinking.com/naturaldyes.html You can use different mordants to produce several colours from each vegetable dye. I had a go at dip-dyeing some arran wool with beetroot - used alum which gave an apricot colour and then added vinegar which gave a more salmony ...

Re: how to raise bread dough without an airing cupboard...

It has added vit c to make it work quicker - you can add your own to ordinary dried yeast if you want. It's not really necessary though, the same result just takes half an hour to get a bit of head on the yeast/water/sugar/salt mix.

Re: What is wrong with T***o?

Large corporates create economies of scale which help to reduce prices which is important. I think this is the biggest problem in the whole issue - they've driven down prices so everyone expects to be able to get everything at a rock bottom price. This brings me back to my original post of their pr...

Re: Irish holiday

If you get to Dublin in the evening, go on the ghost bus - the best couple of hours we spent there (apart from seeing Green Day, which was the purpose of the trip).

They were so good - very informative and hysterically funny.

On that wonderful Grand Designs - you know the one Ben Law built - he painted his walls with turmeric and chilli dyed paint. I can't remember what his paint base was but the colours were gorgeous.

Re: What is wrong with T***o?

I don't like them because of many of their practices - buying up prime land to prevent other supermarkets getting in; small businesses fold because they can't compete; growers have their prices forced down; they perpetuate practices like battery-farmed hens.....the list goes on. My biggest problem i...

Re: Hi from Sunny Fife!

Hi and welcome. We, too are stuck with a house we can't sell - well we could but would end up with the dreaded negative equity - for the time being, at least we can manage,so we're hoping to ride it out. Good luck with your plans.

I'm guessing you used lemon juice to instantly curd rather than waiting for nature. Sounds good though, may have a go!

Re: Sosmix

Last night we had toad in the hole - I doctored the plain sosmix with onions, mushrooms and sweetcorn, lightly fried and then added vegemite and tomato puree. There was far too much mix so we had huevo rancheros for brunch today - it was going to be sausage and egg but the mix had gone a bit crumbly...
