Re: Pineapples
I investigated the rosette that was cut off the top of the harvested pineapple. I has been laying on my potting shed bench for about a week, and I decided to pull the bottom leaves off to see if there are the root buds that I saw before. Well those look like proper roots to me ... . . ...

Re: What are you harvesting now?
Not too bad, nothing broken down here. The wind is in the west this time, so the pea row is more sheltered.
Lots of rain overnight though.

Re: What are you harvesting now?
Just gave away about half a bushel of mixed peppers, red, green and yellow, as we have more than enough frozen and some in the fridge. Runner beans are doing very well this year, and I'm glad I grow them just inside the polytunnel, otherwise they would be flat on the ground after storm Ellen. My pea...

Well I do have two, but technically I've only harvested one at the moment.

Re: Pineapples
I couldn't tell how big it was Sorry I hadn't realised that I didn't post a photo of the whole plant. This is the second one, also ready to eat by the looks and smell of it. You can see the stupidly small flower pot and understand how top heavy they are. They are supposed to produce side shoots fro...

Re: Pineapples
Harvested that pineapple that broke off today, very nice too. About 4 good helpings. The flavour is as good as any other, which wasn't a big surprise as the whole house smelt of pineapple for the past week. What did surprise me was how sweet it is. Usually growing tropical fruit is disappointing as ...

Re: Self sufficientish 2020
I fear that especially for baked beans it's cheaper buying them... Not really Ina, provided you grow your own of course. The cooking in my recipe is for about 30 mins simmering and overnight in a slow cooker, The slow cooker electricity needs is 75 watts, so for 8 hours 600 watts. If the simmering ...

Re: A newbie oldie!!
I agree Flo. I've been "retired" now for 27 years (or to be correct "unemployed" for 18 of those years) and never worked so much.
But now I've slowed down a bit and only work on fine days, I've given up getting wet. Given where I live, that gives me quite a lot of down time.

Re: Self sufficientish 2020
Yesterday she made and bottled six jars of baked beans. I do hope you have a proper canner. I made a batch of baked beans some years ago and bottled and water bathed them. A couple of weeks later they had all started working and probably full of botulism, I had to throw them all away. That's what s...

Re: Pineapples
One of my pineapple plants fell over a couple of days ago, not really a surprise as they are both extremely top heavy. In the process the fruit snapped off. I don't think it will be a problem though as it's nearly ripe and they both smell distinctly pineappley. Not as small as I first thought, in fa...

Re: Help with identification please
On my bush the fruits turn bright yellow in late autumn and remain on the branches until they rot (they don't fall off like other fruit). Mine has yellow fruit and flowers out at the same time. I always understood that they should be quince flavoured, but every time I've tried to eat one, the best I...

Re: Help with identification please
Hah, that was the reason I planted one, a nice small bush rather than a big sprawling "proper" quince tree. It has plenty of fruit, but they are as hard as old boots and if you either pick them, or leave them on the tree, they go from hard to rotten in no time after about 3 months. I even ...

Re: Help with identification please
That looks like a Japanese Quince (Chaenomeles Japonica).
I have one and the fruit changes colour in late autumn to a bright yellow, and has orange flowers in late winter.
It also has thorns, and I have never come across an apple tree with thorns.
