Re: Well, poop!
Not likely rabbits Kath - they ususally take them off at stem first (45 degree cut) and then eat them.

Re: Onions
As I said earlier I am trying; my early broccoli and cabbage was just starting to head so I took the metting cloche off them (they were getting too tall) Withing 24 hours the cockatoos have taken them all down to ground level. Perhaps invest in a netting tunnel house?

Not these days, at least not in Oz, though in the past they did contain arsenic.

Re: Weed killing on lawns
Depends on what the weed is, most lawn weeds (broadleaf) are annual or biennual and are weak competitors as seedlings. The idea is to provide more competition (grass) that prevents seedlings from establishing - we call this weed resilliance. If you have perrennial weeds then they will need to be rem...

Re: Weed killing on lawns
OK; I will be the galah and give a real answer. Yes it does make a difference except for a very limited number of products that you will definately not find on the retail shelf. The majority of herbicides require the product to be absorbed through leaf or root and translocated through the plant to t...

Re: Worried about daughter/grandkids!
As DND said, they are adults and should be able to make up their own minds. However SS does become a bit of a habit and a downward spiral that gets harder and harder to climb out of. We do suppliment the grandkids to a degree through clothes, books, trips to museums, parks etc. just as our parents h...

Re: High street shops
Watch it folks! I bought work boots on line a few years ago and they also looked identical and were branded the same as those I usually bought locally. However, they only lasted a couple of months rather than the one or two years I normally get out of boots. The soles did not stand up to heat and oi...

Re: Mattresses
We havent needed to replace a mattress for years as the kids took theirs with them as they moved out but I remember what a pain it was to dispose of them. We bought new beds (replacing kids singles with doubles) and mattresses when we moved to this house. Inevitably, we now need to replace at least ...

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?
"free to air" Tv here is not worth watching; even the sporting events have been bought up by the pay TV mob. I don't subscribe to any pay TV systems on principle.
I have managed to scrounge early editions of some Dickens, Conan Doyle etc. Different reading to the modern versions

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?
People commonly re-watch the same movies, TV serials, go to the same gallery, walk in the same places etc. etc. so why not re-visit a good book? I have occasionally had a clean out and donated books to the local library or op shop but have found myself often buying some of the same titles again later.

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?
We have nominated the farm house as a sreen free zone; much to the shock and horror of our urbanite, screen addicted grandchildren. We dont have hard wired phone lines there so no internet link other than via wireless which works really well on the South East corner of the verandah, in the evening a...

Re: Compost worms
Its a catch 22 Flo - Rain would be great but I need to prepare the site well before the tree planting to get the rip lines stable for the babies. If not enough rain then the planting will have to be delayed a year; I don't fancy watering 3,000 trees and shrubs over summer. The site already has a num...

Re: Onions
Good idea Tony, I hadn't thought of freezing intact cloves; I presume peeled? The idea of crushing before freezing was so that I could just throw the frozen stuff straight in the pot. My thought was using Ice cube trays.

Re: Compost worms
Another patch I started on on Sunday last; even worse than the previous. As this part is being planted to trees this winter I will have to work it up finer. Too much air space and therefore poor root/soil contact means the trees will die over the summer even if I water them. Tape is at 500mm Clod 8....

Re: Onions
Thanks MKG - I can give mine all of those conditions in one day this year! On a more positive side, the onions I planted from seed have now caught up to the same varieties planted from sets 2 weeks before; doesn't look like the successive planting thing is going to work unless I increase the time ga...
