Re: What next? Going to school with no shoes?
How does it work in the States, we in the UK seem to think there are no beneifts in the States, and everyone walks round with Major Illnesses as they can't afford Health care, but then I read that the US spends more per head of population on "free" health care than we do in the UK? I neve...

Re: Stupid Plants
Do the stems show any changes as they ripen? On the strawberries that grow at my parents' house, once in a while the berries will only turn red in one tiny spot while the rest stays white, and I've noticed that when it's ripe-but-white the stem changes. It gets a little darker and looks dry. Just a ...

Re: Anyone have fibromyalgia?
I had dizzy spells that sound like that, turned out to be a misalignment in my neck. I see a chiropractor every few weeks to deal with it.

Re: Odd bean
I've had heirloom squash seeds do it, I think it's just a random mutation, or maybe a gene got switched off. It happens.

Re: Is giving up, giving up
But even to the liberal arty people who are my friends and family this is hearsay, I'm giving up, I'm wasting myself, I could do so much more etc. People will always try to tell you how to live your life. If you listen objectively you may notice that most of the time, what they're actually doing is...

Re: debt collection agencies - advice needed
Get one of those gadgets that records your phone conversations. A lot of debt collection agents use tactics that are illegal. In addition, there are con artists who sometimes immitate debt collectors, and some of them are very good at it too! My dad still thinks I got in trouble for not paying my co...

Re: Odd bean
Hmmm, save seed from that one. It might be a mutation made it less responsive to gravity, and thus usefull for space travellers. (No, I'm not joking. I used to have a special setup for testing how well plants would grow in low- or no-gravity. NASA used to do tests like that but I'm not sure if they ...

Re: Collard
Slightly off topic Durgan but does anyone know if there is an alternative UK term for collards? We don't seem to have it over here, unless we grow it by another name. It's what they sell as "spring greens" in the shops Maggie, which are immature spring cabbage. I don't think that's accura...

Re: Incubating without an incubator?!
I came across a mention of an alternative way to incubate eggs, and it doesn't require expensive equipment, either. It involves putting the egg between one's . . . . umm, the censors will kick that word out, so lets just call it "an area of female anatomy". I'm still trying to find more in...

Re: Bamboo ?
I've tried growing the clumping kind a couple of times, but it never took root. To be honest, I think it was DOA. But, someone a few blocks away has a nice hedge of it, and I'm pretty sure it's the same kind I was trying to grow, so I might see if I can buy a clump off of him to grow. An online frie...

Re: Parsnips
My method for planting parnips involves ... um... actually, nature plants them for me. Turns out they've become invasive in parts of the US, I never had to buy a single seed. The wild ones are genetically the same as the garden ones, although if the soil is heavy or rocky the roots won't grow as big.

Re: Leprechauns, Fairies and other little people
Look up the term "otherkin" and you'll find people who believe themselves to be decended from various mythological creatures. Most of them are full of it, but some do have actual physical abnormalities that make you wonder. Pointed ears, extra bones, that sort of thing. I have a friend who...

Some corset makers use those for boning.
