Re: What i'm brewing at the moment

I'm bartering with one of my colleagues for a load of rhubarb. I'd like to make some wine with it but I wondered what flavours go well with it - any tried and tested recipes you could pass on? Would rhubarb and elderflower work well? :flower: :study: I made this recently - its flavour is good but i...

Re: Processing firewood - some tools and tips

As for protective gear using a chainsaw - I don't think of it as high tech - just common sense. Chainsaw injuries are horrific and fast. Sure you might not have one. You might not have an accident in a car either - but seatbelts are still a good idea. Well you'd proably even safer in a car with a f...

Re: Home made bone meal

Feathers and hair are very high in nitrogen and organic sulphur and are fine additions to the compost heap. They tend to clump together, so they need to be mixed with other stuff. My preferred blend is a mixture of hair & feathers with up to four times their volume of grass clippings and the cleani...

Re: ban on homeopathy for animals, but not humans!

It's unfair to lump herbal remedies with homeopathy as they are not the same thing. Herbal medicine and the use of pure chemical constituents from plants still subscribe to dose-response pharmacology rather than the diluted "water memory" bunkum that is homeopathy. I choose herbal wherever I can. I...

Re: frozen grapes into wine

I've just done this with 2 carrier bags full of grapes - they will take a long time to defrost though. 2 days in a big bucket (you get more juice this way as freezing bursts the cell walls releasing more liquid). Once defrosted i smashed the hell out of them with my hands (you could also use cleaned...

Re: Old brewing recipes

I tried treacle ale because as a 14 yr old I could not buy proper homebrew ingredients from the shops. It was just treacle, more brown sugar and the 'yeast' was provided by floating bread in it as I remember. When i use it, i am using a hopped malt extract of reasonable quality and then replacing a...

Re: Old brewing recipes

I've made some interesting old brews over the years, albeit not the medicinal ones. Nettle ale has quite soporific qualities, as anyone who's come to one of our barbecues will know. Mangel ale is fairly good according to the OH, who's my resident expert on ale. Treacle ale is an acquired taste. Eld...

Beet sugar also makes crap alcohol. Cane sugar is infinitely better.

Re: Anyone tried this method?

Can't follow the link at the moment, but i think this was mentioned on another of my forums - is this the jobby that claims to hit 20-22% or some BS like that? IF so, don't bother it uses a nasty turbo yeast that will make your head and taste-buds wish they had never been born! Can only see a bit on...
