Re: Best soak recipes

I'm not sure of the science behind it, but I had been told, by a well-travelled WOOFer, that ash is preferable in hotter climes, while the wood shaving option is more suited in the colder north.

Re: Fight obesity like tobacco

Sizes are mostly height and weight proportionate, which very few of us are. Some manufacturers use "vanity sizing" and others don't, but at the end of the day its just a number, and the only important factor is that it fits.

Re: Does soil affect flavour?

It's a mixture of temperature, sun, rain, and soil. Add more organic matter to the soil to increase flavour, but that alone won't make for flavoursome toms. I think I read somewhere that the ideal temperatures to grow tomatoes was 80s during the day and 50s or 60s during the night and that they pref...

Re: who's got the oldest singer sewing machine on here??

It only did 1 kind of stitch, but it did it very very well, and even if the tension was set wrong it still didn't tangle every few inches like the other one did. I think that's the real beauty of old Singers. I'm almost willing for my modern machine to reach it's planned obsolescence so I can trade...

Re: almonds

Madeleines and amaretto have got to be worth the risk of a late frost OJ  although you'll need at least two trees (sweet almonds for the dolci and bitter almonds for the booze).

No, but pans bubble over with with water and steam can cause rust.

Re: treat painted cast iron stove

Over here there is a special spray for that. Just mask it up and spray it from the can, it is really super stuff. I am sure you can get in the UK. You can only get the spray paint in Italy too, but I much prefer blacking polish. Up till now I've only buffed it with olive oil to prevent any rust app...

I'm assuming my usual pose, stuck up a tree harvesting olives. It's a brilliant work-out for bingo wings  .

Re: Just bought a standalone internet radio, it's great.

As just stated it depends on the bandwidth of the stream you're listening to as bit-rates vary enormously. Listening to a 64Kbps radio stream 24 hours a day uses about 15GB per month.

Oh, and you can listen to over 10,000 radio stations worldwide (if you have either the time or inclination).

Re: Getting on a bit.

The only time we've ever used GPS was when we decided to head out here towing a caravan. Stupid GPS tried to take us over a bridge in France, which the caravan was too wide for. A nightmare one-way system and the narrow bridge, which seemed to be the only option to cross the river were making us rea...

Re: A Bad Year for Mice

It might be worth having a check to see where they are getting into the house. We've had occasional mouse in the house issues until I discovered they were getting in via a hidden hole that a plumber made and didn't use. A bit of plaster applied and, touch wood, no unwanted visitors since. my friend ...

Re: Friends coming to you on their 'holidays'

If people can't make it to our local town (it only costs €6 by train from one of the nearest airports over 100km away) then we tell them in advance that they will be paying the petrol. I think you really need to prep people before they visit that you don't have the funds to taxi people around, and/o...

Re: Where to go?

We chose southern Italy for a more relaxed way of life and because self-sufficiency is the norm. There are no large farms near us, just families tending their small plots of land to provide for their families and sell any surplus. Like others have warned; where ever you choose, do it because you wan...

Re: Fight obesity like tobacco

Political persuasion has nothing to do with allowing companies to fill their food with with high-fructose corn syrup and other waste products and/or additives without sufficient health warnings. The fact they are allowed put junk foods in packaging with, for example, a sweet old lady, allows them to...
