Re: Make your own polytunnel cheap!

Well done, looks great. the lack of strength is coming from the fact that there's no ridgepole - another broomhandle running lengthways along the apex will soon sort that out. And if you want to be really anal, a diagonal brace to each end hoop will make it bomb proof.

Re: How to kill and prepare a chicken

You're quite right, there's no substitute for having someone show you. And make you a cup of tea until your hands stop shaking, the first time. It's actually not all that hard!

Re: It’s competition time!!! Win a copy of Dave’s new book

Wild food = good, so using leftover wild food = better, right? Sloe Gin Jam I hate throwing away the fruit when I make fruit liqueurs, so I sometimes make jam out of it. This recipe makes a jelly, simply because you strain it off the pulp. Sloe gin jam is quite possibly the finest fruit jam you can ...

Re: Spuds - will this work?

I've done lazy beds, sheet mulch, and 'doing it properly' as advised by Davie there. Davie's method works the best by far. Lazy beds relies on the spuds outperforming the grass, which works better the further north you are as the spud's energy store is more of a relative advantage. Sheet mulching is...

Yes welcome - 'the panel' never fails to reply to a question - although sometimes we do fail to answer it!

Re: Ammonium sulphamate

Good call. From what I've read it leaves the soil acid and fairly toxic to plant life for several months before breaking down completely - so no use in an active polytunnel. You'll be seeing the thistles for a while though I reckon!

Re: Allotments review process - UK

It's only a review looking for soft targets - easy things to axe - rather than an actual proposal to go for allotments. The consultation's all finished now anyhow so all we can do is wait and see if they're stupid enough to try.

Re: Where to plant my peppers?

They do fine in large pots - but if you're growing a variety that's prone to botrytis go for the greenhouse, because of the lower humidity.

An annual conversation with half-drunk dinner guests, consuming my elderflower champagne:
"This is really nice but what are the black bits?"
"Thunderflies. Don't worry about them."

Re: Nearly elderflower time!

Sure - all the elderflower sorbet from scratch recipes are too much work. I make it from my own elderflower cordial as follows: * Mix 165ml elderflower cordial and 300ml of water and cool until half frozen. * Remove from the freezer and beat until soft. * Beat 1 egg white until stiff and add to the ...

Re: How to start wine making?

Yes, you're probably right Mike, except the reason I tried to make wine out of B.Hamburg is because it was a terrible summer and I had several buckets of sour black grapes. Hedgewizard, I'm not fixed on comparing homemade to commercial wine .. it's just that I like my wine and homemade doesn't tast...

Re: How to start wine making?

The Favorit wine kits are pretty good - I've done a 5 gallen liebfrau that was pretty much like the real thing. I don't see why people are so fixed on making wines that taste like grape wines though - I wouldn't swap my elderflower for the world!

Re: How to start wine making?

I posted this on another thread, but this one is a really good one to have a go at before investing too much. http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Dandelion-Wine All you need that you might not already have is wine yeast, balloons and filters. Recipe wise, just work out what ingredients you have to hand and...

Re: How to start wine making?

You can't make wine without some basic kit, Sarah - at a minimum a couple of demijohns, airlocks, syphon tube, corker, corks and campden tablets. The only stuff I know you can do at this time of year with no kit at all is elderflower champagne . Freecycle's really good for getting hold of kit though...
