Cold Frame from Junk
Got a pallet crate from work, a load of pallet wood and a scrap piece of carbonate that I found blowing around somewhere. The hinges are nicked from a gate, but I would have preferred to use some reclaimed ones. As an absolute minimum, you could make this with a claw hammer, a saw and some nails. I'...

Re: Rusty tools
The only outbuilding I have is really damp and dilapidated - it's a constant uphill struggle to keep stuff from rusting. Hence the need to build a proper outhouse.

Re: Rusty tools
Thanks Weedo - I'll be taking that advice and drilling the duff handles out instead.
Lump hammer - that's the name I've heard before!

Re: Rusty tools
Sounds like a good idea. We've got a really old pair of shears that have outlasted several newer ones. The hinge always seems to go but the old ones chug along sturdily. New handles might be an issue, but if you can source/make those cleaning them up and getting an edge shouldn't be too bad. We've ...

Re: Rusty tools
I know it's a prehistoric post, but I've recently found a prehistoric set of shears and a selection of other ancient tools in my tumbledown boiler house. I'm going to see if the shears can be revitalised - I had put them on the bonfire pile so I could just give the metal to the scrappie, but I'm fee...

Re: Spring?
We have the first indications of spring here after what has been a crazily mild winter, really. We've had perhaps 3 or 4 hard frosts. Daffs are poking their heads up here, but they're pretty far behind the rest of the country's daffs - I definitely planted them far too late. Need to finish building ...

Re: Useful tips for starting on a self sufficientish path
I do actually know a person who doesn't use her oven - barely ever. I didn't learn to cook (at all) until my 20s, which was a huge oversight that's now corrected for, but I can see how somebody could hobble by without really knowing. For us, we moved into this house (the allotment is behind it) and ...

Re: Pet gripes
Very High Winds. We do get them here and the greenhouse has been caught again. Sometimes the strong winds come up the entry passage between me and next door's back garden with more force than required. This time we seem to have lost the roof panel totally - it's not glass and we usually find it par...

Re: Pet gripes
My trusty head torch (probably as old as me); the bulb blew a couple of days ago. Can I find a replacement bulb? Can I hell. Was hoping to be able to convert it to LED, but looks like I'll just have to replace the whole thing, which doesn't sit well with me. So yes - things that replacement parts ar...

Re: Phone apps
I feel like I need a mobile phone because of the long distances I travel, often alone, to get to - well anywhere really. A "just in case" phone which usually cost a tenner from T$sco. We laughingly referred to them as my "drug dealer" phone (anyone seen The Wire?). I only moved ...

Re: Today I Dug Up...
I have also found golf balls. I think I may be digging my way through an old shed at the moment, but it's so decomposed it's actually not quite possible to tell! How does this stuff get down there? That's what I'd love to know. Also, anybody know what to do with a wheelie bin full of broken glass? I...
