Re: Planting under cherry tree

Permaculture!- likely to get your mouth washed out with soap using that word around here, particularly in the sub-tropics.

Re: Transporting children

The rationale is that, in the case of a collision with a car, the child is unlikely to survive as it is low down either on the tag along or trailer and likely to go under the car even at low speed and that being contained in the trailer adds to the risk.

Re: Dangerous weather

Looking forward to autumn here so that planting can begin - the last 5 days have been plus 40c, cooled off to low 30's / high 20's for the next few days and then back up again; Feb and March are our hottest months. Lovely storm Saturday, wrecked a number of big trees and took most of the roof off th...

I also like them raw (eat them like an apple) or shredded in coleslaw or in a stirfry.

Re: Planting under cherry tree

Most things will grow under the tree without affecting it other than competiton for nutrients and moisture- I would avoid anything in the Rosaceae family that could provide a host for cherry pests and diseases, in particular any that retain fruit or leaves over winter. Also avoid planting close to t...

Re: Transporting children

Both passengers in trailers behind bikes and tag-along bikes have recently been banned on roads in NSW for safety reasons. The only option now allowed is purpose built seats on the adult bike itself.

Re: What are you growing this year (2017)

Hi
I have never heard of any of these potato varieties (except King Edward; nearly extinct in Oz) despite being from one of our major potato growing regions - can anyone point me to a site where I can get more info?

Re: Radish and turnip

Showing my Oz ignorance again, but how do you (can you) use turnip tops and are there any particular varieties that are better than others? I have eaten the turnip bulb from varieties planted for livestock grazing and they are fine but are the tops OK?

Re: What's wrong with fennel?

Hi From my limited knowledge Fennel is allelopathic to a fairly high degree as far as greatly reducing germination of the seeds of other species rather than, like some wild sages, actually killing existing growth. I would guess that anything of a reasonable size planted with fennel would survive and...

Re: No dig gardening method

Hi, sorry guys but I have to jump in with some science on this one Doofa - manure is most definitely NOT just grass clippings with the nitrogen removed. Firstly, ruminants (in this case cattle) do not just graze grass (unless on a monoculture pasture - in which case any competent husbander would sup...

Re: Fresh woodchip and chickens - OK?

I have used willow solution as a rooting stimulant - I used fresh green twigs, poured boiling water over them and let steep for 24 hours. I does work but I have never tried to keep it. The willow is so easy to get that there is really no purpose in trying the store the solution.

Re: Bread

GA - the higher fat & protein, nil carb diet worked really well for me - 10kg lost. The really hard bit is getting the right food while travelling (which I do a lot for work), particularly in the remoter parts and watching the carb overload with the beer. Ordering a bar meal like a hamburger with no...

Re: Bread

I found a treasure at a charity book stall for $2 - The Sunday Times "Book of Real Bread" 1982. I think I may need a translation or two as I work through it though. It still has the London Bookshops original price sticker on it
