Re: This year's gluts and failures

I have to beat them off with a stick for my marmalade here, when I make a batch, it is sold straight away, but I guess there is an ageing population here, but who doesn't love a slice of toast at any time of the day with some really good very chunky marmalade and loads of butter. Gluts, I am drownin...

Re: Hi from SW Ireland

Hi Welcome, I live in Ireland as well, in the North West, I must have done something in a previous life, or I would have been sensible and gone to live on the Sheeps Head and grow exotic fruits like some people can here

Re: What Is For Tea?

I hate anything that tastes of celery :pukeright: I defrosted about a kilo of pork mince to make some scotch eggs to serve as a starter for friends coming for dinner, then her ewes started lambing so it was called off, so I made a massive vat of bolognese sauce with it instead, so it looks like we m...

Re: How do you water potatoes through fabric?

Yes, you will be tired, you won't have much energy for much else for a good few months, you might even find yourself grabbing a bit of sleep during the day instead of going out gardening, but once you have settled into a routine and you get to understand what your baby is about things will settle do...

Re: Weather

oh, it did say something about the board down, but I saw my reply come up. Well my reply was that when I lived in Berkshire, May 17th was considered to be the last date for hard frosts, but I always proceeded with caution, it is later here in the NW, we haven't hit spring yet so we are still late wi...

Rain has stopped everything, since last year, if it stopped raining for a few weeks we could get in there again with the digger

Re: How do you water potatoes through fabric?

I grow no dig potatoes in a 4 foot wide bed, I have used a fabric in the past and I would recommend using the black fabric type rather than the woven stuff which if you cut frays like made and gets all over the place. I don't grow potatoes in rows, or use ridges, I put the potatoes approx 12" a...

Re: Storm Dora - how are you bearing up?

Howling wind all night long, the worst storm since we have lived in Ireland and probably the worst since '87. My hotbed propagators had the flaps ripped off and the first one has been through some gales already and lived to tell the tale, mostly just pots thrown around, lots of trees down in the are...

Re: Hotbed Propagator

So is this a special hot bed or is it your 'normal' compost bin that you're adapting to function as a hotbed whilst it's working away? Yes, these are my usual compost bins, I just collect up all the stuff I need, which only takes me a few weeks with all my animals and build the heap in one go. You ...
