Re: The Education System
Old jerry sorry if I sound idealistic, currently this is only in a few classrooms including mine and I don't deny that the current education system as a whole is flawed Pelmetman you say academics value education over intelligence, I would say that might be true for those who have achieved a BA but ...

Re: The Education System
There is a need for cooperation and competition. But I think the biggest emphasis on competition should be against oneself - to improve on our own ) This is what I'm writing my masters dissertation on! it's called ipsative learning/assessment where you get students to reflect on their learning, eff...

Re: The Education System
None of my extra words rather than bad spelling is up there though please do forgive my typing as it's on an iPhone rather than boot up my proper computer, the entire touch-screen keyboard is about 5cm wide and 3cm tall so sometimes I might hit the next key or the auto-correct text might change the ...

Re: Best homemade yogurt recipe?
Thanks for the ideas, whole milk it is then
I must sound very thick but what do you mean by a carton? ( ie 'petit filou'' or 'ski' size pot or bigger? I've got a big pot of natural yoghurt in fridge)
And how do I strain enough to make Greek style but not 'cheese'?

Re: Am I Going Mad?
I ditto Green Aura & Nomada - not to ' fit in' but as a final up yours. From what you say about her language & behaviour I would guess she's had a massive testicleling from the Head for insensitivity and has been ordered to apologise, didn't have the guts in the Morning, was told off again a...

Re: Feed the birds, tuppence a bag?
Thanks mike that really helps as I will have to be careful because the holes in the wire used are quite spacious so that's a great tip.

Re: Do you get excited over free composting material?
Yes! Next door isn't bothered about his garden and gets some gardeners in once s year to mow the law & weed the drive. I popped in to talk about the evergreen hedge between us and got a massive bag of grass clippings ( his grassy bit is about 80 feet long) for my compost which has been a bit dry...

Feed the birds, tuppence a bag?
Mum went to a craft fair & bought me a bird feeder & drink from recycled materials but I was thinking what's best to put in it- I know very little about birds but I do know different birds like different things and will be feeding young too so don't want any sick because of poor decision mak...

Re: The Education System
Not quite what I meant, Lilyfae. I am a product of that same grammar school system - although I was there a long time before Maggie's name was newsworthy. It wasn't a bed of roses. But I came out recalling a lot, knowing a lot, understanding a lot, having a solid background in areas I would otherwi...

Re: The Education System
"Thatcherite grammar school rubbish- middle class kids who can recall a lot but know very little." Sorry, but I think this might be part of the problem I'm talking about. Mike Yep & that's what good teachers are fighting against- sad thing is Michael Gove is of that recitative...

Re: The Education System
This isn't a judgement of anyone's ability to teach, more a rant about fashionable lingo. I do not want my kids to go to school and have people there who enable her to learn. I want teachers. I want people who are knowledgeable about their subject who can *teach* my children There are so many ways ...

Re: The Education System
The problems come from the government/councils who demand we include specific things in our lessons, also from the fact that we have to get the grades our children need. There is not a lot of time for the organic processes of exploration and experimentation because we have so much else to pack into...
