Re: Over use of Anti depressants?
Is'nt it thoughts that cause depression? And if so how can a pill fix that? I'm not sure the line between clinical and non-clinical depression is quite as clear as some people make out. I've suffered from something that showed all the signs of clinical depression, but was definitely the result of ci...

Re: Moral support for crap gardeners
Excellent asparagus substitute, eh? The dreaded willowherb may yet have a place in my garden  Susie, you may find getting rid of the triffids the 'hard' way isn't actually all that hard. Our new garden had been well cultivated then neglected for a few years, and when I finally girded my...

If you're using Firefox, the zoom only affects the site you're looking at, not other sites, and it remembers it when you come back. Change it using ctrl + and ctrl -

Re: Moral support for crap gardeners
That's excellent news about ground elder - I'm not sure if I have any in my new garden, but I had plenty in my old one, and I have a feeling it might have followed me... Last year I discovered how tasty dandelion flowers are and reclassified them as a vegetable. I'm now carefully taking any dandelio...

Re: Seed sowing
I was going to plant my onion seeds this afternoon, but when I dug up some soil to mix with compost to plant them in, the soil was frozen solid. Not easy to mix, and I didn't think the onions would appreciate it either! Being a newbie, I'm following seed packet instructions, which say at this time o...

Re: What have you got brewing at the moment
I have some marmalade wine on the go. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I bought (and chopped) far too much citrus fruit to make marmalade, so rather than chuck it out, I threw in some water, sugar and yeast, and set it on its way. I'm expecting it to taste "interesting"

Re: With apologies to all Vegans
I was reading a magazine recently (Practical Smallholder or somesuch) which encouraged people to keep rabbits for meat, but in two separate articles authors recommended encouraging children to keep them as pets, saying that children would feel proud of their contribution to the household economy. U...

Re: With apologies to all Vegans
And really, dont all animals kill others(even if only by accidently treading on them)?Unless you're a Janist monk(and even they get someone else to do the sweeping) then you're gona kill something. Or are we superior to other animals?..Isn't that the outlook that's got us in all this s--t? No critic...

Re: With apologies to all Vegans
I'm with Susie on this. I've made a decision not to include animals in my attempts at self sufficiency because I know I couldn't cope with killing them. If I had to choose between killing my own meat and going veggie, I would definitely be veggie (and have been in the past). I don't think I'd have a...

Ours loves mint. Not catmint - she's not interested in that - but peppermint. We have to be careful if meeting her just after brushing teeth - she'd lick them if we let her

Re: CATS!!
I bent his ear about it and asked him to stop his cat coming into my garden. His reply was " oh it's a cat, you can't stop a cat going into other peoples gardens, it's natural" With owners like that one despairs. Seriously, what do you expect him to do? Keep the cat locked in the house al...

Re: Elderflower Cordial
I made elderflower cordial last summer for the first time (can't remember how I sterilised the bottles - chemicals, I think) and found it didn't last very long. This is probably because I didn't put any citric acid in, only lemon juice, and presumably not enough of that. This year I plan to bottle i...

Sorry for the pedantic, uninteresting post, but
No it doesn't. VAT on home fuel and power is still 5%.snapdragon wrote: 2. It goes on home fuel and power, which will put up the cost for anyone who doesn't produce their own electricity, and everyone who uses gas or oil.
