Re: Sell out UK

If true... seems a little short of specifics ! The specifics are here: http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/d/corporate_tax_reform_complete_document.pdf See pages 87 and 88: "Under the present rules, UK companies are subject to CT on the profits of their foreign branches, with credit given for foreign tax...

Sell out UK

This is just utterly depressing. I generally avoid the news as it gets me down and there's nothing I can do anyway, but friends passed this on: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/feb/07/tax-city-heist-of-century?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+theguardian%2Fcomme...

Re: Whats age got to do with it???

are there any things you are very proud to have done "at the so called "wrong age"? I was talking to a colleague about my plans for leaving work and trying a more self sufficient lifestyle and he said, "Aren't you a bit young for that?" Apparently 36 is a bit young to retire and tend my garden

Re: Bee petition

How does this... ...a plethora of recent studies... equal that; There is no evidence that authorised pesticides pose an unacceptable risk to the health of bees. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: I think the key word there is "unacceptable," as in, "There's plenty of evidence for risk, but we're will...

Much as I'd hate to promote consumerism, I have one of these

and it's great for cooking little pies over (or ineed under - I haven't tried it that way) the fire.

Re: Anyone use vodka for anything other than drinking?

   It's always puzzled me that ten minutes or so is reckoned to be enough to drive off any amount of alcohol, whereas raising a pan of water to 100 deg C for ten minutes would only drive off some of it - it would take quite a while to evaporate the whole lot. My guess is that the stro...

Re: Anyone use vodka for anything other than drinking?

I've been researching the possibility of using horse chestnuts as a local alternative to soap nuts, and have learnt that the best solvent for extracting saponins from the nuts is a mixture of alcohol and water. Not sure what vodka would do to the laundry, but I may give it a go in the autumn.

Re: How far would you go?

At the moment, not very far. A friend gave me John Seymour's self sufficiency book, and I was very taken with his advice not to try to do everything at once. To start with, I'm focusing on gardening and cooking - in time I hope to go further. I do try to use less electricity but I don't think I coul...

I got pretty excited when I saw a sign up a few miles from where we live saying, "Free horse manure"

Re: Moral support for crap gardeners

Can you tell me if this is fine as well? Is it ok to get someone else to replace fencing? I am having this guilt that I ought to be out there doing something clever with a hammer whereas realistically I would have no clue how to do it and no-one to help me. I know the feeling! I had grand plans abo...

Re: "Imperial Leather" Flavouring for Soap

(Actually, just googled, and they say their fragrance was originally a blend of 'Turkish Rose, Lavender, Cumin and Precious Amber', I can see the cumin but I'm not sure about the rest, anyway shows you how much I know! ;-) ). Evidently much more than I do  Maybe it was because I grew up with ...

Re: "Imperial Leather" Flavouring for Soap

I have a bar in my bathroom, kindly left by the previous owners of the house. We've been using it for three months and I'm desperate to finish it so I can start on my first bar of homemade soap which, funnily enough, smells like the soap my grandma used to use! I can't help with the scent, but I don...

Re: Over use of Anti depressants?

I wonder just how much blame can be laid at the door of the sheer range of choices we are presented with as part of modern living. I think you have a point, here. I've heard of some psychology research finding that people who were given a choice between two nice things were less happy with what the...
