Re: Old dogs........

I don't know about your Toyota machine, but the old one I inherited from my mum has survived a huge amount of neglect and is still going strong, so yours might be alright. You probably want someone who knows their way around a sewing machine to have a look at it. Is there a haberdashers near you? Th...

Re: We will try to ID your mushrooms here

I was just coming here to ask what happened to all the mushrooms. I went out this morning and found one small clump of hedgehog fungus and one tawny grisette. It's very reassuring to hear that it's not just me! I do hope they come back.

Re: propagate wild roses?

Um, thanks Doofa, I think. I have seen rosa rugosa alba for sale, but that involves spending money. Dnd, OJ, thanks - very helpful. I'll try that, as I have the seed. Cuttings take a little more effort, as I have to go out and find the plants again, but I might give that a go as well. While we're at...

propagate wild roses?

OK, maybe they won't be strictly 'wild' if I've grown them on purpose, but having found precious few rose hips in my recent searches, I'd like to grow some myself. I found a few, so I've got some seeds, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to grow them. Should I take cuttings instead? If I can gr...

Re: When do I harvest sugar beet?

I don't know, but I suppose it would make sense from an evolutionary perspective. As I understand it, we like sugar because it's a good source of energy, and other animals have the same need for energy as we do. Thanks for the tip about fodder, Ina. We don't have any livestock, but we know quite a f...

Re: When do I harvest sugar beet?

I was looking for the answer in a farming magazine, and read that they've had such good harvests in the UK recently that there's now a surplus and prices have plummeted. The big factories are offering one year opt-outs from their contracts, so farmers can grow something else for a year and go back t...

Re: Banish Plastic

A lot of people just throw them in the bin with the rubbish instead of using them because they are the wrong size for the bin in the kitchen. Really? What a waste! I'm too lazy to bother remembering when I'm supposed to put them out, and I figure that if they leave them on my doorstep unaske...

When do I harvest sugar beet?

Disregarding the advice of those here who've tried this before, I've grown sugar beet this year. It's looking great, but how do I know when to harvest it? Do I wait for the leaves to die back? I've never grown any type of beet before, so I'm completely clueless.

Wild yeast

I seem to have caught some wild yeast  I've tried before, with no luck, and this time was by accident, of course. I'd soaked some pieces of crab apple in elderflower cordial for use in a cake, and kept the apple/elderflower syrup in a jar (not knowing what to do with it, but not wanting to t...

Re: my bramblecutting has died

And I thought I was a little odd for propagating elder  I think your piece of bramble probably put all its energy into making new leaves instead of new roots. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it's still alive and making roots now, or will recover at some point and come back to life, just whe...

Re: A Scottish Foraging Odyssey Week 1 (A Trio of Fungi)

I certainly respect the wisdom of your advice, I just take more risks with my own health than is generally considered sensible. I don't advise anyone to follow my lead! I do avoid anything growing on yew, though, and I'd probably check trees I wasn't sure of. These were growing on birch, which I kno...
