Re: how long do they keep? preserves, chutney etc

Properly made preserves of all types should keep for years, particularly if unopened. Keep them in a cool dark store cupboard. For jams, just make sure you use good quality fruit and the proper amount of sugar (most fruits need approx equal quantities, tho some need a bit more or less --see recipe b...

Re: weight loss group

I'm in !!

last Monday morning I was 11 st 12 lb and would ideally like to be under 10 stone

Have tried cutting down on "fattening foods" this week and quick hops on & off scales seem to show a slight decrease, but will do a proper weigh-in tomorrow morning

Re: soya

While dairy products are well-known for being a cause of eczema & asthma, soya is also one of the common allergens that has to be specified on ingredient labels.

You might just be unlucky, kezz, and be allergic to both dairy & soya. Have you tried rice milk?

Re: Can you put chutney on compost heaps?

How much are you wanting to dispose of?

if its just an odd jar or so -- why not use it up in cooking -- add a spoonfull or two to a casserole or pan of soup for added flavour. Or a teaspoonfull to a marinade.

Was the chutney always acidic? normally chutneys get more mellow over time.

Re: Know Your Ingredients game

Eeek! Why, I wonder, do the manufacturers feel to the need to explicitly mention the celery? Is it an alergy hazard? yes -- allergens that must be specifically mentioned on food labels include: nuts celery mustard eggs, dairy & gluten are also common allergens but cant remember if they have to ...

Re: Christmas Fair - what a joke

From the other side of the table -- as a stallholder that does regular farmers markets, food fairs etc -- at this time of year there are just too many Christmas Fairs to choose from, so you cannot expect every one to be bustling with good home-made food & crafts. We do tend to be picky -- so if ...

And Nestle now own Buxton Water - I wonder if they've put a charge on the free source in Buxton? Nestle have owned Buxton Water for quite a while - before that it was Perrier (or are they the same conglomerate?) Anyway -- the Well in the Crescent is still free -- and there is often a queue o...

Re: Sour Chutney?

Chutneys do tend to smell very vinegary when first made.
It is the few weeks maturation time that mellows them and makes them palatable!

Re: Elderly tastebuds

Does sound like she is losing her sense of taste -- my father at 88 complains everything tastes like cardboard with no flavour to it at all. He will go for the over-sweet sugary things if he can get one without mum seeing (he is diabetic so shouldnt have them at all) If its the salt that she likes i...

How do you set it so that a person who you are 'friends' with can't see your updates? I know how to set it so that I don't have to see the updates of a friend or a 'like' but not the other way round..... go to account settings / privacy at the bottom is a little blue link "customise&...
